Understanding how human-mediated environmental change affects biodiversity is key for conserving evolvability. Because the most severe impacts are ongoing, such an understanding is proving exceptionally difficult to attain. Islands are natural, replicated experiments that serve as proxies for habitat fragmentation and, therefore, allow us to use hi...
Understanding the proximate and ultimate causes of phenotypic variation is fundamental in evolutionary research, as such variation provides the substrate for selection to act upon. Although trait variation can arise due to selection, the importance of neutral processes is sometimes understudied. We presented the first reference-quality genome of th...
We present the first case of predation of a coral earth snake Geophis semidoliatus by a cat-eyed snake Leptodeira septentrionalis in the municipality of Atoyac, Veracruz, Mexico. Furthermore, we briefly discuss the implications of this predator-prey interaction.
In different ecosystems, snakes are one of the most important predators of amphibians. Nevertheless, to better understand predator-prey dynamics it is necessary to know the identity of the species, something that is usually difficult. Here, we present the first case of predation on a Hyalinobatrachium viridissimum egg clutch by the snake Imantodes...
We present a case of predation of the Small-eared Treefrog Rheohyla miotympanum by the Variegated False Coral Snake Pliocercus elapoides in central Veracruz, Mexico. This record represents the first known predatory reptile of the Small-eared Treefrog and the first hylid prey item recorded in the diet of the Variegated False Coral.
Kinosternon abaxillare is a poorly known aquatic turtle endemic to the Grijalva River Basin, in the Central Depression of Chiapas, Mexico and northwestern Guatemala. It is considered an omnivorous species, but mainly carnivorous, as is typical for kinosternids. As reported for other turtles of its genus, the diet of this species would predictably i...

Indotyphlops braminus is a snake introduced into Mexican territory; it can be found in different republic states. In Veracruz, it has previously been reported from three municipalities. Our observations in the present note provide four new records for the distribution of I. braminus in Veracruz.
In this note we record the presence of Crotalus triseriatus in five municipalities in the Central-West portion of the state of Veracruz and a new locality of the state of Puebla. We also record a new vegetation type occupied by the species, and a new lower boundary in their altitudinal range.
Here we document the first case of predation on the lizards Abronia graminea and Sceloporus bicanthalis, presumably by the Loggerhead Shrike, Lanius ludovicianus, in west-central Veracruz, Mexico
Conophis lineatus is a widely distributed species, from Mexico to Costa Rica, recognized for its wide diet breadth. Here we present two feeding events under natural conditions, as well as a review of literature on the species in the diet of C. lineatus.
We document the first record of heterospecific amplexus between Rhinella horribilis and Rhinophrynus dorsalis, which we observed in the ejido Tierra y Libertad, municipality of Jiquipilas, Chiapas, Mexico. This behavior is a type of reproductive interference, and we suggest that it has differentially negative effects on the two species.
Documenta...
First green now blue: first case of axanthism in Smilisca baudinii (Duméril and Bibron, 1841) (Amphibia: Anura). Cases of pigmentary abnormalities have been documented in several amphibians and reptiles. These abnormalities have been classified as leucism, albinism, melanism and axanthism, among others. We report here the first case of axanthism in...
First record of kyphoscoliosis in Sceloporus formosus (Squamata: Phrynosomatidae) in Veracruz, México. In June 2019, we found a female with malformations in the spine and tail in a remnant of cloud forest, apparently not associated the use of agrochemicals, observing that despite a severe malformation the individual did not present abnormal locomot...
Eleutherodactylus planirostris is a native species from Cuba, Bahamas, and Cayman Islands in the Caribbean Sea that has been accidentally introduced in different parts of the world, including the American continent. This species has been recorded in different locations of Veracruz in the Gulf of Mexico. The three new localities for this species rep...
The Altas Montañas region in west-central Veracruz has been recognized as an important area for the discovery of new species of amphibians and reptiles since the 1940's and has been considered a biologically important "hotspot" for its richness and endemism of species. We performed extensive sampling in La Colonia Agrícola Rincón de las Flores (CAR...
Incilius cristatus is distinguished from other toad species by presenting prominent crests. It is classified as a critically endangered species by the IUCN, and under special protection by NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010. Also, it is an endemic species of Mexico. In this note, we report a predation event of I. cristatus by Sumichrast's Garter Snake, Thamnoph...
We report for first time the lizard Anolis sagrei (introduced species) as a prey item of Oxybelis aeneus in Quintana Roo, Mexico.
Several cases of pigmentary abnormalities have been documented in salamanders. These abnormalities can be partial or total and are derived from the absence or excess of pigmentation produced by chromatophores (pigment cells). Here, we present the first record of melanism in the salamander Bolitoglossa rufescens, from Veracruz, Mexico, being this th...
The Cuban Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei) is native to the Bahamas, the Cuba Archipelago, and Little Cayman, but is now among the world's most widely distributed invasive lizards. In Mexico, the species has been reported from the states of Campeche, Chiapas, Jalisco, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Yucatán. However, no complete compend...
