This project covers the last 15.000 years and uses an innovative interconnection of local sequences, their spatial heterogeneity, reconstructions of regional macroclimate using independent abiotic (stable isotopes) and biotic proxies, modelling of past landscape patterns and testing their effect on recent diversity, and continental-scale comparisons. Geographically, the project is focused on the Western Carpathians as the major biogeographical interface within Europe, and Northern France as a reference region with a different refugial history. Fossils of terrestrial molluscs in calcareous deposits act as a principal proxy. Pollen, testate amoebae and plant macrofossils act as important proxies for validations of local developments, macroclimate reconstructions and spatial modelling of past landscape diversification.
