Introduction
Dr. Vamsi Krishna Rentala currently works as Scientific Employee at AV-NDT, Berlin Germany. He obtained his Ph.D Materials Engineering from University of Hyderabad in 2021. His expertise mainly lies in reliability estimation of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques using POD procedures. He is actively involved in the German Wipano project titled as "normPOD", which is aimed at developing new POD standards for all the common industries. Dr.Vamsi also works on POD of NDE 4.0

Usage of non-destructive testing or evaluation (NDT/E) techniques is widely accepted across various industries all over the world in order to maintain certain safety and quality standards. However, not many countries really perform the reliability evaluation of their NDT techniques. In this context, this article discusses the importance of reliabil...
Reliability evaluations of modern test systems under the Industry 4.0 technologies, play a vital role in the successful transformation to NDE 4.0. This is due to the fact that NDE 4.0 is mainly based on the interconnection between the cyber-physical systems. When the individual reliability of the various important technologies from the Industry 4.0...
This chapter mainly focuses on the major aspects of the reliability of nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques. From the safety point of view, evaluation of NDT techniques is vital for many risk-involved industries such as in aero-industry, railways, nuclear, oil and gas, etc. In addition, successful implementation of the damage tolerance concept h...
Establishing probability of detection (POD) or reliability of various nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques is essential for implementing damage tolerant (DT) methodology for aero-engines. This POD is usually established with the help of a large number of service expired aero-engine components containing several fatigue cracks. In the absence of...

Conventionally, under the concept of safe life methodology for aero-engines, the components after reaching the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specified life are
retired from service. Therefore, safe life is a highly conservative methodology and does not fully utilize the materials’ potential. In order to overcome this conservative approach,...
Assessing the reliability of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques in detecting in-service fatigue cracks is vital for ensuring the structural integrity of aero engines. However, the requirement of a large number of in-service failed components with numerous initiating fatigue cracks makes it a cost-intensive methodology. Hence, laboratory sampl...
Damage Tolerance (DT) lifing methodology for aero-engines require the reliability of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques used. Probability of Detection (POD) for measuring NDT reliability yields the a90/95 (flaw detection with 90% probability and 95% confidence) value. This a90/95 or the largest crack size missed by an NDT technique is in gene...
In order to successfully implement Damage Tolerance (DT) methodology for aero-engines, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques are vital for assessing the remaining life of the component. Probability of Detection (POD), a standard measure of NDT reliability, is usually estimated as per MIL-HDBK-1823A standard. Estimation of POD of any NDT techniqu...
Successful implementation of damage tolerance methodology requires estimation of the reliability of the currently practiced non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques in the aero-engine industry. Reliability of the NDT techniques is measured in terms of probability of detection (POD). POD is dependent on material, geometry along with size, shape, loc...
Probability of detection (POD), a measure of the reliability of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, occupies a prominent role in the damage tolerance lifingmethodology for aero-engines. POD is usually dependent on material and geometry of the component, crack characteristics, environment, etc. Typically, POD curves are plotted for both quanti...
Objective: To study the effect of elliptical crack aspect ratio on its probability of detection (POD) Motivation:
Objective: To study the feasibility of Internal Friction to identify cracks. Motivation:
Fatigue cracks originating from in-service aero-engine turbine discs are usually known to follow log-normal distribution. Non-destructive testing techniques used for detecting fatigue cracks produce response either as HIT (detected)/ MISS (undetected) or "a" (crack size) Vs. "â" (crack response) depending on the type of the NDT techniques used. Und...

Estimation Single Crystal Elastic Constants(SCEC) using Ultrasonic testing.
Amongst the life assessment methodologies for aero-engines, Damage Tolerance
philosophy occupies a pioneering role from safety point of view. In this approach,
knowledge of initial crack size determined by NDT techniques is of significant importance
for assessing the remaining load/stress cycles which the component can withstand.
However, estimatio...
Establishing alternative methodologies for generation of Probability of Detection (POD) samples for use in the reliability studies of various NDT Techniques.
Historically, non-destructive techniques (NDT) were used widely for defect detection in aero-engine components/structures. In the safe life approach of life extension, non-destructive techniques were only concerned with the defect detection rather than crack propagation as in the case of damage tolerance management adopted lately by all engine manu...
