Commodity crop expansion, for both global and domestic urban markets, follows multiple land change pathways entailing direct and indirect deforestation, and results in various social and environmental impacts. Here we compare six published case studies of rapid commodity crop expansion within forested tropical regions. Across cases, between 1.7% an...

Cocoa cultivation is labeled as a driver of both deforestation and reforestation, yet the extent of the phenomena varies at farm and landscape level and as a response to national and local contexts. In this study, we documented the main pathways and contexts behind cocoa cultivation in two sites with different histories of cocoa cultivation. We com...

The forest-based farming system (FBFS) is found in the Congo Basin and in discrete fragments of coastal west Africa. It is a largely transitional phase to more intensive, often less sustainable systems. FBFS are relatively food secure due to all year round production and access to non-timber forest food products. However, poverty is pronounced as a...

Agroforestry mitigation potential was recognized by Peru in its NDC; nevertheless the country has not yet advanced in an appropriate MRV system allowing agroforestry contribution to be incorporated in the emission reductions to fulfil the national pledge to UNFCCC. We highlight main gaps and barriers as a first assessment to impulse focused and pre...

Technical, financial and regulatory constraints mean that agroforestry and tree based systems (TBS) are not visible in National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (INGEI) despite the fact that in many countries they have expressed a political will to promote them as a climate change adaptation and mitigation measure. Their mitigation potential thus remains...

During the last decade, in Central Africa, timber volume of the artisanal chainsaw milling (CSM) sector, main-ly for domestic markets, has exceeded that processed by the export-oriented industrial sector. However, due to lack of legal alternatives, CSM is largely an informal activity. We rely on the theory of access to understand the mechanisms of...

The Trees on Farms (TonF) project is aimed at building the awareness of the role trees on farms can play in biodiversity conservation across landscapes in Peru, Indonesia, Honduras, Uganda and Rwanda. Our rationale is simple – trees provide valuable ecosystem services from fuelwood to improving soil fertility and controlling water runoff. They provide fodder for livestock and habitat for animals and pollinators. Globally, trees on agricultural lands account for more than 75% of carbon sequestration. Farmers need them, and the planet does too. Learn more about our work with governments, local communities and other stakeholders to achieve this goal. TonF is funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and implemented by the World Agroforestry (ICRAF) in partnership with the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñza (CATIE), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Gorge-August-Universität Göttingen and Leibnitz Universität Hannover.

CIFOR-ICRAF community of practice on the calculation of returns on investment in agroforestry. The purpose of this CoP is to clarify and support the use of consistent methods for valuing costs and returns over time to investments in agroforestry. The initial focus is on market based agroforestry with a microeconomic lens.
