The project is aimed at further study of the Cold Intermediate Layer (CIL) formation using the characteristic properties of the CIL core waters: minimum water temperature, salinity 7.6-7.8 ppm, location within the density structure of CIL in-between the quasihomogeneous and gradient sub-layers. The study is based on the verification of three proposed hypotheses and combines the analysis of satellite imagery, field data, Copernicus reanalysis data, and numerical modeling results of the principal configurations.
