y the beginning of the 21st century, as a result of growing human activities, the ecosystems of the Black Sea underwent significant changes. The northeastern part of the Black Sea coast became overpopulated. Eutrophication, overfishing, sediment damping, bottom dredging, climate warming, and alien species introduction, all resulted in the plankton...
Evolutionary mechanisms driving the diversification of pelagic animals remain poorly understood, partly due to the high levels of gene flow in the open ocean. We use molecular phylogenetics, morphological, and phylogeographic approaches to test the allopatric speciation model in respect to the Atlantic krill genus Nematoscelis. Based on our observa...

The Arctic climate is changing rapidly. The warming and resultant longer open water periods suggest a potential for expansion of marine vegetation along the vast Arctic coastline. We compiled and reviewed the scattered time series on Arctic marine vegetation and explored trends for macroalgae and eelgrass (Zostera marina). We identified a total of...
The Black Sea is the world's largest marine anoxic basin. The aim of this study is to identify key factors determining distribution of zoobenthos communities across the permanent pycno-halo-oxycline at the boundary of the Black Sea oxic zone. Two benthic surveys and measurements of the dissolved oxygen at a moored station were carried out at the te...

Впервые на русском языке подробно описана методика систематического природоохранного планирования с помощью платформы Марксан. Приведены общее описание и характер...
Macropodia czernjawskii (Brandt, 1880), described from the Black Sea, was ignored in the regional faunal accounts for more than a century, although it was recognised in the Mediterranean. Instead, M. longirostris (Fabricius, 1775) and M. rostrata (Linnaeus, 1761) were frequently listed for the Black Sea. We selected a lectotype and redescribed the...
The species composition and structure of bottom communities with a predominance of bivalve mollusks of
the genus Portlandia, which are widespread on the shelf of the Russian Arctic, were analyzed. Molecular genetic analysis confirmed that Portlandia aestuariorum and P. arctica are valid species; it had been shown that
all P. arctica tested from dif...
Polychaete species Spio filicornis and Prionospio cirrifera are the most frequent and abundant representatives of the Spionidae family listed for the Black Sea. However, both species are recently redescribed from type localities (the coast of Greenland and the Kara Sea, respectively), their ranges are specified and the presence in the Black Sea is...
Currently, the genus Parathyasira Iredale, 1930, typified by P. resupina Iredale, 1930 from the Tasman Sea, consists of 10 accepted species. P. dunbari (Lubinsky, 1976) was originally described from shelf depths of the northwestern region of the Canadian archipelago. It was considered as a shallow-water high-Arctic species, which is endemic for the...
Oriental shrimp (Palaemon macrodactylus Rathbun, 1902) was recorded for the first time in the waters of the European part of Russia in the Kerch Strait (Sea of Azov, Chushka Spit coast, Krasnodar krai, Russia) in July 2018. The species natural geographic range is located in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, while the invasion range includes the Atlan...
The aim of the present study is to reveal the consequences of the blood ark (Anadara kagoshimensis) invasion of Taman Bay (the Sea of Azov), one of the biggest boreal brackish coastal lagoon. Anadara kagoshimensis was found there for the first time in 2003. During our work from 2003 to 2013, the blood arks were found at eleven of 83 stations in the...

In 2016, we discovered for the first time the new for the Black sea flora species of macroalgae identified as "tralliella" stage of Bonnemaisonia hamifera Hariot. The introduction of which has an invasive character, and the impact on the ecosystem is hypothetically enormous. The aim of our work was to
study of this invasion along the Russian coast...
The structure of a fragment (523 nucleotide pairs) of the 1st subunit of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase (COI) gene has been studied in the populations of alien crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii (family Panopeidae) that established in the basins of the Azov-Black and Caspian Seas in 1930–1950s. In the samples of 6 populations from this region, 4 haplo...
The first ecological survey in the tropical part of the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) was conducted between 17 °14’N and 16 °40’N in February-March 2015 during the 37th cruise of the RV Professor Logachev. Significant effort of the survey was aimed at studies of benthic non-vent soft sediment fauna at depths from 2270 m to 3900 m. Samples of th...
Primary production (PP) models of the Kara Sea are developed based on data collected on fall
expeditions (September–October 1993, 2007, and 2011) and their precision assessment utilizes the dataset
collected in September 2013. The algorithms for different model types (depth-integrated and depth-resolved)
are compared. The depth-resolved model perfo...
Research was implemented from September 15 through October 4, 2011 in the Kara Sea along transects located southeastwards Novaya Zemlya, in the St. Anna Trough, the Yenisei River estuary, and the adjacent shelf. The concentration of chlorophyll a was the highest in the photic zone (0.05–2.30 mg/m3, on average, 0.80 ± 0.37 mg/m3). The maximal concen...
A varunid crab Brachynotus sexdentatus was reported as a common and abundant species in
the Sea of Azov in the 1930 – 1940s. Since then, its population has virtually disappeared or
at least strongly declined in this basin. This coincided with the appearance and spread of a
non-indigenous crab species Rhithropanopeus harrisii. At the same time B. se...
he White Sea is an enclave of the Arctic ocean. Paleontological, paleoecological, and archaeological data demonstrate that during the Holocene temperature maximum when the coasts of the White Sea were covered by broad-leaf forests, marine ecosystems retained the Arctic features. Our studies indicate that several types of subtidal (dominated by quah...
Tamanskij Bay opens into the Kerch Strait which connects the Black and the Azov seas and houses the shallow ecosystem which is the most important in the Russian part of the Black. Sea. This ecosystem is dominated by sea grasses (Zostera marina etc). We have been studying bottom sediment hydrocarbons distribution and biomarkers of the pollution in M...
We studied the characteristics of the Cystoseira (Cystoseira barbata C. Ag, Cystoseira crinita (Desf.) Bory) community at the North Caucasian coast of the Black Sea under the conditions of the pronounced sea-bottom relief,
namely, ridge- and steplike benches. It is shown that a number of parameters of the composition and community structure (the
sp...
The benthic algal coenosis, consisting of microphytobenthos, macrophytes, and microepiphytes, exhibited changes related to gradually increasing salinity in the Large Aral Sea from 2002 to 2005. Since 2000, the diversity has decreased from 159 species [Mirabdullayev, E.M., 2004. Succession of the ecosystems of the Aral Sea during its transition from...
