In the decentralization of forest management, the state devolves forestland use right to communities. What if the state devolves the right directly to individual households, not to communities? Does this policy work and within this policy what devolution mechanism works better in terms of forest conservation? This paper addresses these questions us...

River deltas and estuaries are disproportionally-significant coastal landforms that are inhabited by nearly 600 M people globally. In recent history, rapid socioeconomic development has dramatically changed many of the World's mega deltas, which have typically undergone agricultural intensification and expansion, land-use change, urbanization, wate...

Using a remote sensing approach integrating different sources of satellite images and on-the-ground maps and data, the study traced the historical changes in terms of losses of green space and water bodies due to urbanization of Can Tho City from the 60s to the present, from which flood-prone zones are mapped. Overlaying the results with the master...

A rice yield estimation system was developed based on the crop growth model ORYZA and SAR-derived key information such as start of season (SOS) and leaf area growth rate. Results from study sites in South and South-east Asian countries suggest that incorporating remote sensing data, specifically Synthetic aperture radar (SAR), into a process-based...

Aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing animal food production sectors worldwide, became the main source of valuable animal protein in many countries and offers great potentials for global food security. While capture fisheries production stagnated over the past years, aquaculture has seen a remarkably increase from 6.2 Mio tones in 1983 to 70.2...

Coastal ecosystems represent a potential additional source of the greenhouse gas methane (CH4) that has been insufficiently quantified. Thus, to understand the mechanisms controlling greenhouse gas emissions in these ecosystems, this study investigated CH4 emissions from and the related microbial properties of mangrove soils. Soil and gas samples w...

Rice is the most important food security crop in Asia. Information on its seasonal extent forms part of the national accounting of many Asian countries. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery is highly suitable for detecting lowland rice, especially in tropical and sub-tropical regions where pervasive cloud cover in the rainy seasons precludes the...

Earth Observation is a powerful tool for the detection of floods. Microwave sensors are typically favored as they deliver data enabling water detection independent of solar illumination or cloud cover conditions. However, scale issues play an important role in radar based flood mapping. Depending on the flood related phenomenon under investigation,...

Thesis
Mangrove ecosystem is among the most productive and valuable eosystems in the world. The services provided by mangrove ecosystems to human well-being are well acknowledged in literature. Mangrove forests provide not only direct use values such as timber materials and fisheries resources but also indirect use values, for instance coastal protection,...
