Introduction
My current research issues are those involving the use of expert-modeling videos in nursing education. More specifically, the use of expert-modeling videos in simulation to improve student understanding, performance, & ultimately translation of theory to practice. I am working on 2 studies: Interprofessional collaboration & academic motivation in nursing education. Look for my latest publication 10/2020 "Risks and benefits of high flow nasal cannulas in response to the COVID-19 pandemic"

Background: Anxiety in simulations can be influenced by various factors that either motivate or immobilize students. Understanding simulation anxiety is crucial for educators to design appropriately challenging scenarios without overwhelming students. No instruments have yet been tested to differentiate between debilitating and facilitating anxiety...

Background Expert modeling videos (EMVs) have shown promise in improving students’ performance in simulation. However, research evaluating the impact of EMVs is limited to major performance areas, lacking exploration into specific student competency behaviors. Purpose This study evaluated the effect of an EMV intervention on undergraduate nursing...

Role assignment in nursing simulation is a time met with great anxiety due to the fear of the unknown, performing in front of faculty and peers, and social evaluation anxiety. Using role rubrics and expert modeling videos may better prepare students for their role in simulation, reducing these barriers and promoting student learning. A convenience...
Article
Background: Developing engaging pre-simulation learning materials that provide contextualized patient information is needed to best prepare students for nursing simulation. One emerging strategy that can be used by educators to create visual images for storytelling is generative artificial intelligence (AI). Purpose: The purpose of this pilot stud...

Background: Nurse educators are called to develop innovative teaching strategies to build clinical competency. Expert modeling videos (EMVs) promote clinical competency by demonstrating exemplar nursing care. Methods: A quasiexperimental research study was conducted using a prebriefing intervention of a nursing process video for demonstration (e...

Background Research has provided evidence that students often choose not to complete ungraded or extra credit elective activities. While other fields have attempted to understand and address this issue, there is a dearth of knowledge on nursing students’ choices for completion of elective activities. Method A survey was completed by 133 nursing st...
