Under-ice irradiance measurements were done on ponded first-year pack ice along three transects during the ICE12 expedition north of Svalbard. Bulk transmittances (400–900 nm) were found to be on average 0.15–0.20 under bare ice, and 0.39–0.46 under ponded ice. Radiative transfer modelling was done with a plane-parallel model. While simulated trans...
The Arctic Ocean is rapidly changing from thicker multiyear to thinner first-year ice cover, with significant consequences for radiative transfer through the ice pack and light availability for algal growth. A thinner, more dynamic ice cover will possibly result in more frequent leads, covered by newly formed ice with little snow cover. We studied...
During the Norwegian young sea ICE expedition (N-ICE2015) from January to June 2015 the pack ice in the Arctic Ocean north of Svalbard was studied during four drifts between 83° and 80° N. This pack ice consisted of a mix of second-year, first-year and young ice. The physical properties and ice algal community composition was investigated in the th...
In spring 2015, we observed an extensive phytoplankton bloom of Phaeocystis pouchetii, with chlorophyll a concentrations up to 7.5 mg m-3 , under compact snow-covered Arctic sea ice at 80-81˚N during the Norwegian young sea ICE (N-ICE2015) expedition. We investigated the influence of the under-ice bloom on inherent optical properties (IOPs) of the...

The Arctic icescape is rapidly transforming from a thicker multiyear ice cover to a thinner and largely seasonal first-year ice cover with significant consequences for Arctic primary production. One critical challenge is to understand how productivity will change within the next decades. Recent studies have reported extensive phytoplankton blooms b...
The deposition of solar energy in the upper Arctic Ocean depends, among other things, on the composition of the water column. During the N-ICE2015 expedition, a drift in the Arctic pack ice north of Svalbard, an under-ice phytoplankton bloom was encountered in May 2015. This bloom led to significant changes in the inherent optical properties (IOPs)...
Spectral albedo and transmittance in the range 400nm to 900nm were measured on three separate dates on less than 15cm thick new Arctic sea ice growing on Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, at 78.9°N 11.9°E. Inherent optical properties, including absorption coefficients of particulate and dissolved material, were obtained from ice samples and fed into a radiat...
This report summarizes the 2013 field experiment at Tofo Beach, Tofo, Inhambane, in which measurements of bottom topography, currents, sea level, and surface waves were collected. A visual assessment of the surrounding areas was also made, and some comments are made concerning the morphology at Tofo Beach.

Alongshore flows strongly driven by tides and waves is studied in the context of a one-dimensional numerical model. Observations from field surveys performed in a semi-enclosed lagoon (1.7 km×0.2 km) outside Xai-Xai, Mozambique, are used to validate the model results. The model is able to capture most of the observed temporal variability of the cur...
