A well developed and maintained highway infrastructure is essential for the economic and social prosperity of modern societies. Highway maintenance poses significant challenges pertaining to the ever-increasing ongoing traffic, insufficient budget allocations and lack of resources. Road potholes detection and timely repair is a major contributing f...
The vehicle instrument cluster is one of the most advanced and complicated electronic embedded control systems used in modern vehicles providing a driver with an interface to control and determine the status of the vehicle. In this paper, we develop a novel hybrid approach called Hierarchical Spatial-Temporal State Machine (HSTSM). The approach add...

5th Generation (5G) communication systems are expected to undergo significant advances, with optical-wireless technologies being at the forefront of system design addressing key requirements targeting high performance, versatility and cost-effectiveness. The EU-funded EXPLOR project aims to develop a comprehensive modular platform with experimental...
Short- and long-range wireless communication is imperative for many remote monitoring applications such as industrial automation, digital health, and smart cities. Remote monitoring is one of the components of complex systems that can be optimized with the use of machine-learning-based techniques. In this article, an intelligent parking system is p...
Automated fault detection is an important part of a quality control system. It has the potential to increase the overall quality of monitored products and processes. The fault detection of automotive instrument cluster systems in computer- based manufacturing assembly lines is currently limited to simple boundary checking. The analysis of more comp...
Smart city combines connected services from different disciplines offering a promise of increased efficiency in transport and mobility in urban environment. This has been enabled through many important advancements in fields like machine learning, big data analytics, hardware manufacturing and communication technology. Especially important in this...
This paper presents a novel approach to the detection and recognition of faulty audio signalling devices as part of an automated industrial manufacturing quality assurance process. The proposed system outperforms other well-established automated systems based on mel-frequency cepstrum coefficients (MFCC) and multi-layer perceptron (MLP). It uses bo...
Conference Paper
This paper presents a novel system for automatic detection and recognition of faulty audio signaling devices as part of an automated industrial manufacturing process. The system uses historical data labeled by human experts in detecting faulty signaling devices to train an artificial neural network based classifier for modeling their decision makin...

A critical challenge faced by Malaysia is mitigating the negative impact caused by extreme urban flooding. An overwhelming 90% of natural disasters in Malaysia are related to flooding with forecasts predicting that these phenomena are likely to increase, due to factors such as climate change, rapid urbanisation and population growth. Despite government and research efforts there is a lack of effective management systems, information alerts, and routing solutions that can mitigate the devastating impact of urban flooding to the Malaysian economy, society and environment. This InnovateUK funded project involves a consortium of UK and Malaysian commercial and academic partners, which aim to develop an automatic prediction and monitoring platform for urban flood management. Through exploiting state of the art artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches the system will provide early warning and management decision support for authorities. A web link will be created for disseminating more information about the projects developments and research outputs.
