Learning analytics (LA) can provide useful information for addressing the educational needs in Latin American universities, such as reducing program quality disparities and student dropout rates. Some researchers have suggested to build capacity in this region for institutional adoption of LA tools. Yet, there is still a long way to move from exper...

Despite the success of academic advising dashboards in several higher educational institutions (HEI), these dashboards are still under‐explored in Latin American HEI's. To close this gap, three different Latin American universities adapted an existing advising dashboard, originally deployed at the KU Leuven to their own context. In all three cases,...
Article
Many Latin‐American institutions recognise the potential of learning analytics (LA). However, the number of actual LA implementations at scale remains limited, notwithstanding considerable effort made to formulate guidelines and frameworks to support the LA policy development. Guidance on how to coordinate the interaction between the LA policymakin...

In Latin American universities, Learning Analytics (LA) has been perceived as a promising opportunity to leverage data to meet the needs of a diverse student cohort. Although universities have been collecting educational data for years, the adoption of LA in this region is still limited due to the lack of expertise and policies for processing and u...

Learning Analytics (LA) is perceived to be a promising strategy to tackle persisting educational challenges in Latin America, such as quality disparities and high dropout rates. However, Latin American universities have fallen behind in LA adoption compared to institutions in other regions. To understand stakeholders' needs for LA services, this st...

In this study, we present a case study involving two self-service dashboards providing feedback on learning and study skills and on academic achievement. These dashboards were offered to first-year university students in several study programmes in Flanders, Belgium. Data for this study were collected using usage tracking (N = 2875) and a survey ta...

To start medical or dentistry studies in Flanders, prospective students need to pass a central admission test. A blended program with four Small Private Online Courses (SPOCs) was designed to support those students. The logs from the platform provide an opportunity to delve into the learners’ interactions and to develop predictive models to forecas...

Researchers have reported a lack of experience and low graph literacy as significant problems when making visual analytics applications available to a general audience. Therefore, it is fundamental to understand the strengths and weaknesses of different visualizations in the decision-making process. This paper explores the benefits and challenges o...
Conference Paper
In recent years, Learning Analytics (LA) has captured the attention of higher education managers who saw in this research field a means to optimize the process of teaching and learning on a large scale. So far, most studies in LA have concentrated on the development of tools to address educational challenges in the contexts of Europe, Australia, an...

First-year student success in Engineering Bachelor programs is well-studied. Both traditional statistical modelling and machine learning approaches have been used to study what makes students successful. While statistical modelling helps to obtain population-wide patterns, they often fail to create accurate predictions for individual students. Pred...

This papers focuses on the use of learning dashboards in higher education to foster self-regulated learning and open education. Students in higher education have to evolve to independent and lifelong learners. Actionable feedback during learning that evokes critical self-reflection, helps to set learning goals, and strengthens self-regulation will...

Learning Analytics Dashboards (LAD) provide a means to leverage data to support learners, teachers, and counselors. This paper reports on an in-depth analysis of how learners interact with a LAD. N=1,406 first-year students in 12 different study programs were invited to use a LAD to support them in their transition from secondary to higher educatio...

Project (1)
Project
The main goal of the project is to enhance a successful transition from secondary to higher education by means of learning analytics. To this end the project will develop, test, and assess a learning analytics approach that focuses on providing formative and summative feedback to students in the transition. On top of the development of a student dashboard, the project will develop dashboards for the student counselors and teachers, hereby disclosing a vast amount of information that can be used to improve counselling and teaching practices. To realize this ambitious goal the project gathers a multidisciplinary team of learning analytics researchers, educational technology experts, experts in the transition from secondary to higher education, and practitioners. Thanks to this multidisciplinary team, the project will tackle all the different steps required for the application of learning analytics: data collection, data analysis, data visualization, dashboard design, dashboard development, and last but not least the actual implementation and thorough evaluation of the learning analytics approach.
