To ensure long-term competitiveness, companies need to develop the ability to explore, plan, and develop new business fields. A suitable approach faces multiple challenges because it needs to (1) integrate multiple perspectives, (2) ensure a high level of participation of the major stakeholders and decision-makers, (3) function despite a high level...

Along with the rise of the now popular ‘open’ paradigm in innovation management, networks have become a common approach to practicing innovation. Foresight could potentially greatly benefit from resources that become available when the knowledge base increases through networks. This article seeks to investigate how innovation networks and foresight...

Thesis
Firms are facing an increasingly complex environment and highly complex product and service landscapes that often require multiple organizations to collaborate for innovation and offerings. Research in this dissertation was based on the expectation that corporate foresight activities will increasingly be embedded in interorganizational settings a...

Chapter
This chapter analyzes the impact of corporate foresight by means of its circles of impression, from top management and outward at varying distances from the management board. The concept of circles of impression includes processes of communication, and the influence of this communication to impact change, and is demonstrated to be useful and possib...

Research on corporate foresight has been analyzing organizations’ capabilities to scan, interpret and facilitate information from the political, economical and legal environment, in society and in technology. The aim is to prepare and transform the organization adequately to survive in the face of potentially disruptive changes, to benefit as much...
Conference Paper
Results from an in-depth study of networked foresighting are presented, and the added value for the nodes in the network forming the organization under study analyzed. The network's nodes use the results to a very high degree for data collection and activity initiation. Benefits include new insights and outside opinions from a trusted network. Fore...

The basic goal behind innovation contests is to identify new ideas, to get new impetus and to take a share in startups. A major challenge is to approach and connect with the right entrepreneurs and idea providers. The Telekom Innovation Contest 2013 implemented a communication strategy based on social media channels: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn...

Fiber-to-the-home solutions are expected to meet the bandwidth requirements for future access networks. While reliable estimates of expenditures for the network build-up are available, analyses of the interrelation of important parameters influencing revenues are scarce. Our model takes nine parameters into account that have significant impact on t...

This paper explores what types of network access German housing associations currently use and plan to use in the future. Various alternatives exist, for example fibre to the cabinet (FTTC), fiber to the building (FTTB) and fibre to the home (FTTH). To date, a standard access did not emerge.

With upcoming IPTV services telecommunication networks will face new challenges in terms of traffic congestion and quality of transmission. The Quality of Experience (QoE) concept offers ways to overcome congestion problems and to increase perceived quality by end users. In this chapter we used an adapted target costing analysis to evaluate the cur...
Conference Paper
The concept of Quality of Experience (QoE) describes quality as perceived by the end user. The integration of technologies that allow a high level of perceived quality in the aggregation and access network of telecommunication providers is driven by increasing quality awareness and expected increases in network congestion. Nevertheless, major obsta...

This paper evaluates the potential market for experience-optimized service delivery also known as Quality of Experience (QoE). The competitive environment, market potential as well as revenue and cost estimations are part of the analysis that has been conducted within the EUREKA CELTIC project RUBENS. Major findings imply an implicit demand for QoE...
Conference Paper
The concept of Quality of Experience (QoE) comprises quality as perceived by the end user. The implementation of technologies that allow to provide a high and constant level of QoE involves an extensive network of actors, each having its own strategy and chasing different goals. This paper analyses the varying objectives of the actors by applying t...

User behavior of multimedia services currently undergoes strong changes. This is reflected in several recent trends, e.g. the increase of rich media content consumption, preferences for more individual and personalized services and the higher sensitivity of end users for quality issues. These changes will eventually lead to strong changes in networ...

The common way to create Web pages is resource ori- ented. However, in the relatively new kind of composed Web applications, called Mashups, this notion cannot be followed consequently. The remote services that Mashups integrate into one application need to be embedded in a function oriented fashion via custom application code. This paper introduce...

The goal of this project was to explore the value of networked foresight: foresight conducted in innovation networks for the benefit of the network and its partners with active contributions from the partners. Strategic management, specifically the dynamic capabilities approach and vast literature on corporate and strategic foresight argue that deficiencies like one-dimensionality, narrow-sightedness and myopia of closed corporate processes are remedied by incorporating external sources. A broad knowledge base promises to especially benefit foresight in multiple ways. Thus, we created an analytical framework that integrates the dynamic capabilities approach with existing results on potential value contributions of foresight, enriched with existing findings in networked foresight and organizational design in the light of increasing importance of inter-organizational networks. The available papers are based on a series of interviews and a survey among foresight practitioners in the EIT Digital (rebranded from EIT ICT Labs), a network of large industry corporations, small-and-medium sized companies, and academic and research institutes. The project shows that network partners use the results primarily for sensing activities, i.e. data collection and to a lesser extend activity initiation. More sensitive and fundamental organizational aspects such as strategy and decision-making or path-dependency are less affected. Especially SMEs may benefit substantially from network approaches to foresight whereas MNEs are more confident in their existing corporate foresight processes and results. The value for the network itself is substantial and goes beyond value creation potential for companies as discussed in literature. The development of a shared vision—relatable to organizational learning and reconfiguration capabilities—was identified as particularly valuable for the network.

Over the past 10 years, we have developed and implemented a benchmarking framework to assess the Future Preparedness of organizations. Our framework assesses the organizational maturity of a firm across 3 Corporate Foresight practices and 6 Corporate Foresight capabilities. Corporate Foresight is a systematic approach to developing future insights and leveraging them for strategic action. See more at bit.ly/2hFozjT and bit.ly/2gIPcmj. By benchmarking firms we are able to identify organizational barriers and weaknesses, and assess the maturity of Corporate Foresight practices in firms across or within industries.
