Introduction
In my work I use social constructivist methods and qualitative research to discover the presuppositions supporting current practices in the field of public law in general and environmental law in particular. I consider myself a socio-legal scholar with a strong interest in philosophy of law and legal theory. In this paper the author examines to what extent a numerical representation of environmental problems aids and hinders environmental policy making. It is argued that in the early days on environmental policy making the use of numerical frames reduced uncertainty, but that currently it has the opposite effect, leading to production of uncertainty.

This form of argumentation appeals to a number of presuppositions about society, the environment, and human behaviour. Precautionary logic appeals to a sense of fragility of humankind and the environment, the uncertainty of scien...

CONTRA compares urban planning dealing with climate transition in Belgian, Dutch, Norwegian and Polish cities to learn how conflict is handled in different political-legal contexts and whether conflict is suppressed or used for sustainable transformation. CONTRA also pioneers a theatre-based model of living labs (“Drama Labs”) to experiment with productive conflict. The project is funded by ERA-NET Cofund Urban Transformation Capacities (ENUTC) and the Dutch NWO.
