Introduction
Retired environmental scientist, specialised in all aspects of air pollutant and greenhouse gas emission inventories and their application in national and international policy processes. Trained as an experimental physicist with a thesis on the mechanism of photosynthesis, I entered the field of environmental research in the late 1970s working on air pollution, environmental noise and odours and later on all aspects of emission inventories of both air pollutants and greenhouse gases.

Absorbance changes are reported associated with Photosystem II and showing a periodicity of two and four as a function of flash number. The absorbance changes showing a periodicity of two were found to occur in the presence of artificial electron donors as well and are presumably caused by the secondary electron acceptor R of Photosystem II. The ab...

In three field studies odour annoyance is predicted with the use of two dispersion models of malodour: one model with average meteorological data as input, calculates average exposure to odour concentrations, and the second model with momentary actual meteorological data as input, calculates momentary exposure. The results indicate that average con...

Heavy metals constitute an important group of persistent toxic pollutants occurring in ambient air and other media. One of the suspected sources of these metals in the atmosphere is combustion of transport fuels in road vehicles. However, estimates of the emissions of these metals from road vehicles as reported in national emission inventories show...

In the recent Paris Agreement of UNFCCC, Parties to the Convention aim at “holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels, recognizing that this would significantly reduce the risks and impacts of clima...

Many Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) are envisaging the use of significant amounts of biomass as a primary source in their energy supply. The present greenhouse gas (GHG) emission inventory guidelines, based on methods and approaches originally proposed by the IPCC in the 1990s do not add the CO2 emissi...

Kortom, of hog...

This is my final contribution as a now former Editor in Chief of Carbon Management and its predecessor Greenhouse Gas Management and Measurement[1]–[3]. Trained as a physicist, I started working in air pollutant emission inventories in the early 1990s and joined the IPCC inventory program not much later. In the application area I have acted many ye...

Parties to the Climate Convention have set up an elaborate system of reporting and review ensuring Parties inform each other on the progress towards the targets of the convention. This paper analyzes annual national emission inventory submissions, both as to the effort needed for review and the resulting changes in reported emissions. Expert review...

Louis Nico Marie (L. N. M.) Duijsens (Duysens) was one of the giants in the biophysics of photosynthesis. His PhD thesis "Transfer of Excitation Energy in Photosynthesis" (Duysens, 1952) is a classic; he introduced light-induced absorption difference spectroscopy to photosynthesis research and proved the existence of reaction centers, introducing a...

EDITORIAL The importance of non-CO2 greenhouse gases The IPCC Synthesis Report states that reducing emissions of non-CO2 agents can be an important element of global mitigation strategies. The non-CO2 greenhouse gas symposium (NCCG7) shows how this could be possible. Global warming is caused by several greenhouse gases. The focus of science and pol...

Interannual variability (IAV) in tropospheric species concentrations can be driven by variability in emissions, chemistry, transport and UV radiation. We find that meteo...
