Floral structures such as stamen appendages play crucial roles in pollinator attraction, pollinator positioning, pollen‐release dynamics and, ultimately, the reproductive success of plants. The pollen‐rewarding, bee‐buzz‐pollinated flowers of Melastomataceae often bear conspicuous staminal appendages. Surprisingly, their functional role in the poll...

Background The Amazon Rainforest, a paramount source of global biological diversity, faces challenges due to its understudied species richness, an insufficient investment in research and escalating rates of deforestation. Thus, acquiring additional data, especially for species distributions is crucial to fill knowledge gaps and guide forthcoming re...

Background The Parque Estadual do Forno Grande is a fully protected area in the southern Espírito Santo State, Brazil. It belongs to the Atlantic Forest domain, with predominantly dense, ombrophilous, seasonal semi-deciduous forests and herbaceous/shrubby vegetation on rock outcrops. The area is recognised as highly important for conservation, desi...

Background The "Serra da Concórdia" is part of the Atlantic Forest phytogeographical domain in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro and it has a predominant phytophysiognomy of Semideciduous Seasonal Forest. This region underwent intense habitat loss and fragmentation during the 19th century, due to coffee plantations and later pastures. With the...

Background The Atlantic Forest is one of the most diverse and threatened phytogeographical domains in the world. Despite that, it includes regions with poor floristic knowledge, even in protected areas. Although the importance of protected areas in conserving the Atlantic Forest hotspot is undisputed, it is necessary to recognise the floristic rich...

Phylogenetic analyses show that a group of species of Miconia (Melastomataceae: Miconieae) from the Greater Antilles all form a clade. They share the presence of backward-deflexed filaments with the entire androecium turning pink to red after anthesis and placentation reduced axile to basal. Additionally, many of these species are deciduous, and ha...

The asymmetric pattern in species richness is a notable feature across different lineages and geographic regions. While some lineages have high richness, diversity and wide distribution, others have the opposite. Despite low rates of diversification, the latter might also be phylogenetically isolated. Lineages that accumulate these characteristics...

Bertolonieae s.l. has been characterized as herbaceous plants with angular capsules. Despite morphological similarities, molecular data showed that the lineages within it were not homologous, and the traditional diagnostic characters have several different origins in Melastomataceae. Recently, Bertolonieae s.l. was recircumscribed to include only B...

Melastomataceae are the fifth richest plant family in the Atlantic Forest with 544 species belonging to few phylogenetic lineages and present considerable variation in habitat, ecological and reproductive characteristics, and morphology. Some of these lineages are prevailingly centered in the Atlantic Forest, being either endemic (Bertolonieae, Eri...

The distribution of major clades in Bertolonia (Melastomataceae) is congruent with subareas of the Atlantic Forest, providing an opportunity to estimate ages of historical breaks in the Atlantic Forest, from its major north/south split to more restricted local radiations. The role of niche conservatism in driving diversification of Bertolonia is al...

We here describe two new species endemic to the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, that belong to different clades within Miconia s.lat. Miconia quartzicola is presumably part of the Leandra s.str. clade, as indicated by its terminal inflorescences and petals with an acute apex. It has been collected only once in the municipality of Vargem Alta in di...

Aim There is little consensus on which environmental variables are best at predicting multiple dimensions of diversity. We ask whether there are common environmental correlates of diversity, despite ecological differences, across nine clades of plants and animals distributed along a single rainforest domain. For that, we compare the environmental c...

The urge to organise the world around us is an essential part of human nature. Naming and categorising enable us to store and access information ef ciently. The need to name and categorise extends to the natural world and, in particular, to living organisms. The science underpinning this area of knowledge is called Taxonomy, and is as old as humani...

Systematic studies based on DNA sequences have shown that some traditional tribal delimitations in Melastomataceae remain unresolved, such as the ‘Merianthera and allies’ clade, an informal group which has not been formally assigned to a tribe. This clade includes Behuria, Cambessedesia, Dolichoura, Huberia and Merianthera and occurs mainly at high...

The colonization of the epiphytic niche of neotropical forest canopies played an important role in orchid's extraordinary diversification, with rare reversions to the terrestrial habit. To understand the evolutionary context of those reversals, we investigated the diversification of Galeandra, a Neotropical orchid genus which includes epiphytic and...

The colonization of the epiphytic niche of tropical forest canopies played an important role in orchid’s extraordinary diversification in the Neotropics. However, reversals to the terrestrial habit occurred sparsely in species of Epidendroideae. To better understand which factors might have been involved in reversals to terrestrial habits in the pr...
