Contemporary global production networks are confronted with risks due to their complexity and current global crises. Managing risk in global production networks has also become a topic in economic geography that aims to explore how risk mitigation strategies can lead to reconfiguration processes. However, the dominant objective economic understandi...
This book offers conceptual and empirical insights from economic geography to explore how uncertainties, crises, and risks, shape, reshape, and ultimately transform the spatial arrangements of companies and regions.
This book provides valuable insights into the evolving landscape of economic interactions amidst contemporary challenges. It explores...
The structural changes and format shift in the German retail sector have received significant attention from academics and the public for decades. However, comparable developments in the restaurant and bar industry have garnered relatively little attention so far. This also applies to business development and city marketing agencies, which often ha...
Uncertainties, risks, and crises have become important terms in the 21st century’s economic geography, linking diverse thematic issues such as globalization processes, environmental changes, socio-political shifts, and technological advances. Middle-income economies must prioritise human capital development to ensure long-term sustainable growth and economic upgrading. While foreign direct investment (FDI) is believed to aid this endeavour, its impact on technical vocational education and training (TVET) remains understudied. This research explores the influence of FDI by multinational...

The collapse of the global industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated how precarious the livelihoods of workers embedded in globalised industries are. In the global production network literature, moments of crisis have been addressed in the debate on 'GPN risk'. While this debate has contributed to our understanding of firms' risk mitig...
Until the so-called GPN 2.0 approach placed it on the research agenda, risk had played a subordin- ate role in the literature on global production networks (GPN). In GPN 2.0, Knight’s economic notion of risk is applied and defined as rationally calculable, in contrast to uncertainties. However, this still dominant conceptualization of risk falls sh...

The COVID-19 crisis in the restaurant and bar industry is affecting an industry that has been under significant pressure before. Using the concept of organizational resilience from a spatial perspective, we analyze how individual/company factors and regional factors influence owner’s assessment of resilience in the German restaurant and bar industr...
Change triggered by natural hazards such as pluvial and coastal floods, sea-level rise as well as risks resulting from water scarcity are highly dynamic and related to the effects of ongoing climate change. Whether and how societies adapt, adjust, change, or transform because of climate change and related risks, is a currently debated topic. This q...

With this event, the working groups want to strengthen their goals of a deep dialogue between East/Southeast Asia and Germany as w...
Extensive research has addressed the question of why some countries are able to attract a large amount of foreign direct investment (FDI), while others are not. Until now, this research mostly neglected natural disasters as a business risk. In the realm of natural disaster research, some studies have investigated the effect of natural disasters on...

Flood risk in urban coastal areas is on the rise due to increased population , urban growth, environmental degradation, and climate change impacts. State authorities are often overstrained to provide adequate flood risk reduction, including for small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises (SMEs), the backbone of urban economies in Indonesia. SM...
In developing countries, micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) often cannot substantially reduce their exposure to floods on their own. As state authorities also have difficulty in providing sufficient flood protection, experts argue that collective adaptation initiated by firms can compensate for these shortcomings. However, private...
Many manufacturing firms collocate within coastal urban areas in Indonesia. At these locations, they are severely affected by the most occurring environmental hazard, floods. Although research on firms’ adaptation to environmental hazards is burgeoning, the focus still lies on damage evaluation, support for disaster relief, or on how firms can supp...
Many industrial sites in developing countries and emerging economies face increasing exposure to
environmental hazards, e.g. in coastal locations, while being situated within the territory of state
authorities which lack in capacity to provide adaptation solutions. It is therefore relevant to ask,
whether and how firms engage in adaptation, both in...
Moritz Breul and Thomas Neise share some reflections on the 2018 meeting of the Young Economic Geographers Network (YEGN) workshop and set an exciting agenda for future events to be held by the network.
Indonesia′s coastal cities are constantly affected by flooding. In these typical flood-prone areas a high amount of manufacturing firms is located and thus very susceptible to business disruptions. Therefore, this dissertation thesis contributes to the literature by elaborating firms′ role in adaptation on two perspectives: First, it is examined ho...
Manufacturing firms are primarily concentrated in coastal cities like Jakarta and Semarang,
where they are affected by floods. Firms are trying to adapt individually to the floods and
engage partly in collective adaptation efforts like the construction of large pump systems.
Also, city authorities are attempting to reduce the flood risk with intern...
The importance of private sector engagement on risk reduction is increasingly mentioned over the last years. The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 stresses that the private sector should be a crucial partner in achieving disaster resilience. However, the contribution by the private sector is still rare and mostly undertaken by...
