The world is changing rapidly, mainly due to the digitalization of all areas of living. A huge amount of information is accessible via the Internet, and since it is no longer possible for individual humans to keep track of it, artificial intelligence (AI) is analyzing this data. In this rapidly changing world, students have to be educated for a suc...

Jesus gave many statements in the Gospels where He told about His view on God and the afterlife. On the other hand, numerous Near-Death Experiences are documented, and Greyson developed a scale that measures the depth of a Near-Death Experience. When analysing the Gospels before Jesus‟ resurrection and comparing them with Greyson‟ s scale, matches...

This paper presents the idea to intentionally introduce planned chaos into electrical engineering lectures and lab courses to improve students’ learning success. The reason to present this idea are several personal experiences in daily teaching. If students experience some uncertainty in their study program, it is seen that they have higher challen...

An amateur radio lecture was developed and is conducted within the general education program of the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg. This course enables the students to participate in a variety of activities within the university. Different learning formats for communication engineering are carried out in combination with an amateur...

The paper at hand describes how a regional university of applied sciences tried to internationalize its learning and teaching environment. It describes the challenges encountered, the managerial approach taken, illustrates the implemented initiatives, and how effective they turned out. The results might be relevant to faculty staff in managerial po...

This Research Work in Progress Paper evaluates students’ motivation sources and shows the high impact that work of professors has on students’ motivation. Common goal of most professors is to help students acquiring knowledge and competencies that are relevant for their further life. From the beginning of Universities’ history, lectures are usually...

The OTH Regensburg has a broad variety of study programs in technical, business, social and health sciences. Up to now, there is no integral connection in the bachelor curricula between business and technical faculties except for some small subjects. The scope of this project is to develop a new course specialization, which connects engineering and...

During recent years, there has been a trend to replace traditional lab courses by project-based learning activities. However, there is currently little scientific evidence for educational improvements through such changes. Some years ago, a lab course on electrical measurements in our bachelor “Electrical Engineering and Information Technology” was...

Mobility changes from fossil to renewable energy powered vehicles. Due to high battery weight and costs, only a few applications are currently possible. In this paper, battery weight and amortization times for different means of transport are predicted. It is the goal of this article to analyse, which vehicles are suitable for battery powered elect...

In technical study programs on the bachelor level the focus is mainly directed on the scientific education in theory and practice. Publication is usually started during the PhD phase when students write their first scientific papers. During the last years some very successful projects were made at the university of applied sciences Regensburg to mo...

In most of their projects, engineering students work on purely technical topics without tying these to economic or marketing aspects. This type of work does not reflect economic reality where innovation results out of team work among specialists with different academical backgrounds. Reacting to this, our university has introduced a new concept for...

In modern engineer education curricula integrated lab courses are an essential part. Besides the standard lab courses with single experiments in the last years many new practical education types are evolving. In this paper a review on the current state of teaching technology is given and the pros and cons in the view of the author are highlighted....
Conference Paper
In this paper the course digital engineering is described which is held in the second and third semester of our bachelor program Electrical Engineering. In the second semester a theoretical lecture gives an introduction to digital logic and circuits. In the third semester the students have to carry out a project over the whole semester within a pro...

Project Based Learning (PBL) has become a popular method for lab courses to teach practical topics. Most of the student projects are tailored in their complexity and need a defined time for a student team within one semester. With this defined and often reduced complexity of the projects the practical relevance is doubtful. In this here shown appro...
Article
Within the curriculum of the Bachelor Electrical Engineering there are obligatory lab experiments for electrical measurement. In this lab ready-made standard experiments with defined results are carried out by students. As an alternative to these standard experiments individual development projects for interested students are offered. In one series...

In this paper an algorithm for fast wavelength calibration of Optical Spectrum Analyzers (OSAs) using low power reference gas spectra is proposed. In existing OSAs a reference spectrum with low noise for precise detection of the reference extreme values is needed. To generate this spectrum costly hardware with high optical power is necessary. With...
Article
A new fast correlation algorithm for calibrating the wavelength of Optical Spectrum Analyzers (OSAs) was introduced in [1]. The minima of acetylene gas spectra were measured and correlated with saved theoretical data [2]. So it is possible to find the correct wavelength calibration data using a noisy reference spectrum. First tests showed good algo...

I currently teach a course about Communication Systems and due to COVID-19, I changed my lectures to a online format. Now I think that I can retain some of the innovations in my lectures also after COVID-19. I currently do some simulations of Communications Systems and I think that I should integrate these also in future lectures.
