Article
Maerl beds are unique marine habitats hosting a great diversity of organisms while macroalgae are a major component of this diversity. The bay of Brest is one of the most studied coastal ecosystems in the world; in addition, it has a significant background concerning historical seaweeds checklists associated to maerl beds. However, no recent work a...

Biological invasions are one of the main global threats to biodiversity in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems worldwide, requiring effective inventorying and monitoring programs. Here, we present an updated list of non-indigenous species in French marine and transitional waters. Focused on eukaryote pluricellular species found throughout...

Intertidal macroalgal habitats are major components of temperate coastal ecosystems. Their distribution was studied using field sampling and hyperspectral remote mapping on a rocky shore of Porspoder (western Brittany, France). Covers of both dominating macroalgae and the sessile fauna were characterized in situ at low tide in 24 sampling spots, ac...
Article
Physical constraints, and particularly hydrodynamics, are major drivers of macroalgal canopy-dominated rocky shore communities. The abundance of habitat-forming seaweeds decreases with increasing wave exposure, triggering cascading effects on their associated communities. This study aims at describing the structure of benthic communities along a hy...

Macroalgal communities are major components of temperate coastal ecosystems, since they play an essential role in primary production and develop various habitats. Recently, variations in the extent of intertidal seaweed communities were noticed and have been attributed to the global climatic change. To better understand these variations, this work...

Sheltered intertidal environments are characterized by highly diversified macroalgal communities which vary over short spatial scales depending on various environmental pressures. In this study, relations between wave heights and vertical elevation were analyzed in order to identify the respective roles of these factors on the structure of macroalg...

The present study gives an updated list of macroalgal species from the Channel and Atlantic coasts of France. It includes a total of 707 macroalgal species with their taxonomic treatment.
Article
Wave height was used as a proxy to assess the effect of hydrodynamics on the development and structure of intertidal North-East Atlantic rocky macroalgal communities (Brittany). The characterization of hydrodynamics at small-scale (about 10 m) was performed through wave height in situ monitoring using pressure sensors. Both the diversity and the co...

In temperate rocky shores dominated by seaweeds, canopy-forming Phaeophyceae are dominant and form macroalgal communities. These communities are distributed vertically as an adaptation to different emersion durations and horizontally, mainly under the influence of hydrodynamics. The direct effect of hydrodynamics on intertidal organisms is well doc...

The development and composition of rocky shores communities are ruled by several abiotic factors including hydrodynamics. An exposure gradient is observed between sheltered shores, where macroalgal canopies are well developed, and exposed shores, where sessile animals (barnacles, mussels) and limpets dominate the substratum. Hydrodynamics include s...

Project
The coasts of Brittany have one of the greatest macroalgal diversity in the world. Due to its geographical position combining warm and cold affinity species and its diverse marine habitats, it has long been an area of intensive studies of seaweeds systematics and taxonomy. This project aims at listing the macroalgae species of Brittany by updating local check-lists or via the observation of introduced seaweeds. The final objective is to create an illustrated catalog of seaweeds of Brittany and the Northeast Atlantic.
Project
This thesis aims at quantifying and explaining the effects of hydrodynamics on the communities of the North-East Atlantic rocky shores.
