Recently, several reviews have been published on the effects of medications on bone physiology and the clinical side effects in orthodontics. However, the effects of medications on the rate of orthodontic tooth movement have not been evaluated. A systematic literature review on the effects of medications and dietary supplements on the rate of exper...

In this chapter, we reviewed the effects of medication on bone physiology and orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). The chapter is organized according to the classes of medication, such as synthetic analogues of eicosanoids, analgesics, corticosteroids, insulin, relaxin, as well as calcium and calcium regulators. We looked into well-controlled animal s...

Care of individuals with syndromes affecting craniofacial and dental structures are mostly treated by an interdisciplinary team from early childhood on. In addition to medical and dental specialists that have a vivid interest in these syndromes and for whom these syndromes are of evident interest, experts of scientific background—like molecular and...

Background: This longitudinal prospective study aimed to assess orthodontic patients’ immune system response to metal ion release in saliva. Methods: Thirty adult patients (18–35 years) were equally divided into three groups: groups at the end (G1) and beginning (G2) of multibracket appliances (MBA) treatment and a non-treated control group (G3). P...

Aim The oral microenvironment contributes to microbial composition and immune equilibrium. It is considered to be influenced by dietary habits. Phenylketonuria (PKU) patients, who follow a lifelong low‐protein diet, exhibit higher prevalence of oral diseases such as periodontitis, offering a suitable model to explore the interplay between diet, ora...

Background/Objectives Tooth agenesis (TA) is among the most common malformations in humans. Although several causative mutations have been described, the genetic cause often remains elusive. Here, we test whether whole genome sequencing (WGS) could bridge this diagnostic gap. Methods In four families with TA, we assessed the dental phenotype using...

This longitudinal study aimed to evaluate facial growth and soft tissue changes in infants with complete unilateral cleft lip, alveolus, and palate (CUCLAP) at ages 3, 9, and 12 months. Using 3D images of 22 CUCLAP infants, average faces and distance maps for the entire face and specific regions were created. Color-coded maps highlighted more signi...

Cleft lip and palate patients require complex interdisciplinary treatment, including max-illary expansion and secondary alveolar bone grafting. However, the evidence on these treatment procedures and outcomes is lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to survey the subjective observations of European maxillofacial surgeons and orthodontists on the max...

Syndromes affecting craniofacial and dental structures account for one-third of the congenital anomalies. Early diagnosis and treatment guided by an interdisciplinary team are of vital importance not only for an optimal outcome but also because these syndromes are associated often with life-threatening conditions. However, the affected craniofacial...

Patients with an orofacial cleft (OFC) need complex treatment and require long-term and collective decisions from the multidisciplinary team. These patients may have an associated congenital malformation or syndrome. There are conditions like learning or psychiatric disorders or heart diseases that can be diagnosed later in life. Therefore, the cle...

Background Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type VIII is a rare autosomal recessive inherited disorder. Chen et al. recently identified the causative gene and characterized biallelic mutations in the PR domain-containing protein 12 gene, which plays a role in the development of pain-sensing nerve cells. Our patient’s family was included...
