Introduction
My PhD research (since Oct 2020) is titled 'Making the absent object present: frameworks for creating mixed-reality museum exhibitions'. It follows on from my earlier research and is concerned with creating location based museum exhibitions using 3D scans of stored or loaned collections and volumetric video of narrators both alongside traditional physical displays.

Fifty-five thousand museums worldwide are custodians of our cultural legacy and over ninety-five percent of their collections are in storage and rarely, if ever, publicly displayed. This early practice based PhD research explores the viability and acceptability of improving public access to these hidden collections by using recently available digit...

Project
To set up a test Virtual Production environment using Unreal Engine 5. To build a Virtual Production Camera Rig linked by WiFi to Unreal Engine 5 using the Doghut.de Virtual Camera specification. To test Virtual Production in various settings: With a green screen; using a projected backdrop (in place of an LED wall); using motion capture; and rigging a volumetrically captured actor instead of a CGI created avatar.
Project
To first determine what is technically possible. Secondly to use a prototype driven participatory iterative design process to produce practical frameworks that enable: 1. Museums to create a mixed-reality location based exhibition. 2. An online exhibition booking process that offers museum visitors the opportunity to hire smart-glasses at the exhibition and download and install appropriate enabling software on their (qualifying) smartphone. 3. Visitors to experience a mixed reality exhibition using loaned smart glasses (instead of an audio guide) attached to their own smartphones.
Project
To create a portable multi camera volumetric video rig, and a single camera handheld rig with no external connections.
