Introduction
Land filling or reclamation is an act of changing the natural state of a land to another form which makes it more useful to man. Reclamation of land began in the twelfth and thirteenth century in the Netherlands where a vast area of the land is below the sea level, the struggle to posses these lost lands actually became wide known in the sixteenth century (Hoeksema, 2007; Mulder et al., 1994). Land reclamation is always preferred in areas where construction, mining, agricultural development are found and also areas where wetland is to be developed into habitable and economically viable lands. The Netherlands, Bombay, HongKong and several others are typical examples of countries or areas were land reclamation occur. This process literally aids in the expansion of such cities and subsequent

The impact of potentially harmful elements in stream sediments around active and abandoned artisanal gold-mining communities in Nigeria was assessed in this study in order to determine their level of contamination and evaluate the associated health risk. Thirty-fve (35) stream sediment samples were collected within an active mine (ACM-19 samples),...

Toxic metals exuding from mining remain a challenge to the environment and human health. This study investigated the distribution, contamination, toxicity, and potential risks of toxic metals in rocks, soils, sediments, and tailings from a typical Pb-Zn-F mineralization zone in Nigeria. In this study, 64 samples which include soils, stream sediment...

The overwhelming environmental significance of solid waste has attracted a lot of attention because of its leaching into groundwater through waste deposit. The study determines impact of leachate from a landfill site on the quality of groundwater sources in Shagamu, Southwestern, Nigeria. Twelve groundwater samples, (hand dug wells (7) and borehole...
Article
This investigation was done to decide the concentrations, sources and potential risks of metals in media around Ijero area. A total of 80 samples including topsoils, sediments, tailings and whole plants were gathered from this territory while control samples were taken from zone with less human exercises. Samples were pounded, sieved and chemically...

Background. Exposure to heavy metals emanating from cement production and other anthropogenic activities can pose ecological risks. Objectives. A detailed investigation was carried out to assess the contamination and ecological risk of heavy metals associated with dust released during cement production. Methods. Sixty samples, including 30 soils an...

AbstractFormulae display:MathJax Logo? Toxic metals are deleterious to the environment. In this study, risks associated with metals in water from Anka area, Nigeria were unraveled. A total of 104 water samples were collected. The concentrations of metals were determined using high performance liquid chromatography–inductively coupled plasma-mass sp...

Background. Groundwater quality can be poor in Nigeria due to indiscriminate refuse dumping. Exposed dumps serve as point source pollution that discharge potentially toxic heavy metals into the environment. Objectives. The present research aimed to assess the impact of metal pollution on groundwater quality in hand-dug wells around an active dum...
Article
In recent times, there had been reported cases of Pb poisoning in Anka gold mining area, Northwest Nigeria. Therefore, this study was carried out to determine the extent of bioaccumulation of heavy metals in the hairs and nails of children in the area. Forty samples (twenty nails and twenty hairs) samples were collected from ten boys and ten girls...

Geochemical assessment of groundwater was carried out within the basement complex of Ibadan, southwestern Nigeria, in order to establish the impact of urbanization on public health. Physical parameters were determined using insitu digital analytical instruments and samples that were collected were simultaneously analyzed. Geochemical analysis of gr...

Land reclamation is gradually posing negative impact on man due to unplanned urbanization. A study was carried out on impact of land reclamation through sand mining of coastal communities in Ikate and Ilubirin in Lagos, Nigeria. Ten waters (8 surface and 2 groundwater sources), 10 soil samples and air were collected and taken for analysis. Results...

Electrical resistivity investigation was carried out at Olabisi Onabanjo University campus, Ago-Iwoye, Southwestern Nigeria with the aim of evaluating groundwater potential and aquifer protective capacity of the overburden units in the area. The underlain rocks are predominantly porphyroblastic and banded gneiss, quartz-schist and biotite-hornblend...

The geophysical assessment of groundwater in Awa-Ilaporu, near Ago Iwoye southwestern Nigeria was carried out with the aim of delineating probable areas of high groundwater potential. The area falls within the Crystalline Basement Complex of southwestern Nigeria which is predominantly underlain by banded gneiss, granite gneiss and pegmatite. The ge...

Azimuthal cross-square array resistivity soundings were used to detect fractures and investigate the anisotropic properties of crystalline basement rocks in some parts of Eruwa, southwestern Nigeria. Resistivity measurements were taken at ten locations using an Ohmega terrameter. The technique involves the rotation of the electrode array in four di...
