Beach placers are typically rich in heavy minerals, which are crucial for a wide range of industrial applications. This study investigates the human and environmental risks posed by toxic heavy metals (As, Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, Fe, V and Mn) in beach placers of southeastern Sri Lanka using 42 X-ray fluorescence data. Risk indicators (EF, I , CF and PLI)...

Coconut shells (CS) are considered a promising renewable precursor for the synthesis of carbon black (CB). This study explores the potential of coconut shell-based activated carbon black (ACB) as a sustainable solution for black colourant in printing applications, by cabonization parameters for CB synthesis and introducing a low-temperature chemica...

The special calcite bodies (CBs) exposed within the ultrahigh temperature (UHT) granulite facies terrain in the Balangoda area of Sri Lanka preserve shreds of evidence for the generation of crust-derived carbonatite in the crust. The CBs are exclusively made up of massive calcites and appear as concordant bands extending tens of meters or as meso-s...

The dataset contains grain size data of placer and non-placer sediments in lagoonal and riverine beaches of southeastern part of Sri Lanka. A total of 124 swash sediment samples were collected from a 70 km long coastline with an interval of 500 m. Placer sediments in the area mainly have mineralogy of ilmenite, zircon and almandine while non-placer...

At present Microplastics (MPs) have been recognized as one of the most critical and emerging sources of marine pollution with a significant impact on marine and coastal biota. The current study aimed to comprehend MP pollution along the Southeastern coast of Sri Lanka by investigating their spatial distribution, morphology, composition and possible...

Recently, xerographic printing technology has been rapidly developed with the use of dry toner powders for a quality printing process. Polymeric resin, pigment, and charge control agents are the basic components of toner powders. Carbon black is the primary pigment used in toner preparation, which is obtained by incomplete combustion of petroleum o...

In recent years, significant attention has been paid to natural calcite resources as a viable CaCO 3 reservoir for various industrial applications. Despite extensive marble occurrences in the Highland Complex (HC) of Sri Lanka, their usage is limited to a few conventional industries owing to their chemical heterogeneity and dolomitic nature. Howeve...
Conference Paper
Over the last two decades, the prospecting of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) has been extensively increased owing to their wider industrial applications. Stream sediments which are rich in precious gem minerals are considered as one of the emerging alternative sources of REEs with minable concentrations. Hence the present study aimed to investigate the...

Coconut shells (CS) are one of the main domestic wastes that are abundantly used as a precursor to producing activated carbon black (ACB) for various purposes. This study investigated a lowtemperature chemical activation method (LTCA) using NaOH to prepare ACB from CS to apply as the black colourant in toner production. Initially, the cleaned CSs w...

Microplastics (MPs), plastic particles smaller than 5 mm in size, are one of the most emerging environmental threats across the globe significantly in marine environments as a consequence of their non-biodegradability and bioaccumulation. Although garbage dumping with plastic debris could be seen along the Southeast coastline of Sri Lanka, this are...

Beach placers are concentrations of economically potential minerals formed by surface earth processes and are identified as one of the most easily exploitable mineral deposits in the world. We studied the placer and non-placer sediments in lagoonal and riverine beaches of the southeastern part of Sri Lanka to unravel their specific sedimentary feat...

The beach placers are largely composed of resistant heavy minerals and are known as one of the most easily exploitable mineral deposits in the world. Such placers are commonly deposited along the edges of large water bodies due to the gravity separation processes. The southeastern coast of Sri Lanka contains extensive depositional beaches, lagoons,...

Southeastern landmass of Sri Lanka is laid on the Vijayan Complex (VC) rocks, a Precambrian basement characterized with specific geological features since the mineralized contact zone of the Highland–Vijayan boundary is nearby. However, the coastal sedimentation of such a basement is rarely interpreted. Hence, the mineralogy and geochemistry of sur...

The Southeast (SE) coastline of Sri Lanka is located on the southwestern border of Bay of Bengal and has been identified as a progressive coastline that laid on the high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Vijayan Complex (VC). However, the mineral and geochemical compositions of the sediments of this coastline are yet to be understood. In this study, t...

Proterozoic high‐grade marbles cover a significant portion of the Highland Complex (HC) of Sri Lanka. Although many studies on metamorphic silicate rocks of the country have been carried out, marbles, which can be used as a tool to interpret the evolution history of the crust, has been paid little attention. The present study aims to understand the...

Beach-rocks are cemented coastal sediments that occur mainly under subtropical to tropical climatic conditions. Due to higher biogenic chemical association on the beach fronts, Sri Lanka comprises variety of beach-rocks around the island. This study was aimed to report the field, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of ilmenite rich beach-...

Economically important, unique calcite deposits occur in high-grade marbles near the litho-tectonic boundary between the Highland Complex (HC) and Vijayan Complex (VC) around Balangoda. The present study aimed to characterize trace element geochemistry of the differently coloured calcite of these deposits to postulate their possible origin. Combine...

Southeast (SE) coast of Sri Lanka has been identified as a progressive type beach, which is located in a coastal current mixing zone of the Indian Ocean. Although studies on the ocean current circulations have been carried out, sedimentological characterization on the coastal sediments has been less studied despite their significance. The present s...

Commercial exploitation of iron ore deposits is usually determined by their geochemical characters. As a result, a pre-investigation of geochemical pattern of such ore bodies would be constructive in mineral prospecting. The present study aimed to investigate chemical distribution of iron ore deposit exposed in Buttala, Monaragala District, Sri Lan...

Abstract Extensive vein-type mica deposits at Elahera in north-central Sri Lanka are associated with meta-ultrabasite (MUB) boudins in impure marbles. Mineralization occurs as discontinuous, lenticular bodies concordant with the impure marbles at the contacts with MUB. Impure marbles show typical granulite facies assemblages overprinted by retrogra...
