Introduction
I am an environmental and experimental economist. My research uses counterfactual methods (incl. experimental, quasi-experimental and graphical approaches) to causally evaluate conservation and climate adaptation interventions and policies, and to examine the mechanisms through which these policies generate impacts.

Question
I have is a small dataset of 150 observations (villages) and quite a complex model with 6 variables and 13 paths. This results in 23 parameter estimates (q) (including coefficients, constants and variances) from our SEM, which means we have about 6 observations per parameter. This is a lot less than the recommended N:q ratio of 20 observations per parameter recommended by Kline (2015).
Furthermore, ideally we would be controlling for some potential confounders in most of the pathways, so this reduces the N:q ratio even further. When I do this (i.e. run the SEM with extra covariates), the model shows some pathways being highly significant. When I re-run the model without the covariates, these are no longer significant.
I am not sure which of these outputs is more reliable - on the one hand, the N:q ratio in the model with all controls is tiny, so the significant parameters may be completely unreliable. However, inclusion of the covariates may be improving the model by removing/absorbing variance.
Can anyone advise on how I might choose between models?

This project seeks to identify ways of reducing excessive consumption, with the aim of minimising the environmental impacts and inequalities of consumption. Excessive consumption is particularly a problem associated with affluence, not only because of the environmental impacts caused by excessive air travel, car use, and consumption of luxury goods by the richer segments of society, but also because of the aspirations they create for the rest of society. By evaluating the potential of voluntary, regulatory and incentive-based approaches, this project aims to find ways to move to a 'smart' consumption future, benefitting people and the planet.

Community-based co-management is hailed as the solution to natural resource decline experienced by rural communities worldwide. It involves decentralised resource management, which responds to social and conservation goals. The Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) network in Fiji is one of the most extensive networks of community-based co-management sites in the world. The LMMA process involves the collaborative generation and dissemination of knowledge and management decisions between scientists, NGOs, fishing communities and government officials, about marine resource management. After 14 years of existence, the LMMA network is seeking to identify lessons learned, to provide guidance to stakeholders about inputs and organizational processes that generate knowledge and decisions that deliver sustainable resource use and management. To address this question, this project seeks to evaluate the impact of LMMAs on social, conservation, health and wellbeing benefits, and to identify how different contextual factors and knowledge co-production processes influence success.
