Introduction
PhD - Biological Sciences from Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Mi research experience has center on the assessment of ecological processes at different scales: individual (animal movement); community (diversity, occupation, and occurrence patterns); landscape (effects of fire regimes and forest fragmentation). I belong to different groups and networks that seek to highlight the research in Colombia, the role of women, and healthy scientific and academic collaboration.

The native savannas of eastern Colombia cover about six percent of the Neotropical savannas. Within these 17 million hectares, the current composition of nonflying mammals evidenced colonization from Andean, Guyanese, and Amazonian speciation centers and endemism processes. Scientific knowledge of the mammal species in native savanna ecosystems in...

In Colombia, three of the four recognized tapir species are recorded, making the country the largest diversity hotspot for the Tapirus genus in the world. The mountain tapir (Tapirus pinchaque) inhabits the ecosystems of the Central and Eastern Andes, lowland tapir (T. terrestris) in the Caribbean, Orinoquia and Amazonia, and the Central American t...

The tapirs are large terrestrial mammals, anatomically and physiologically adapted to almost all habitats and ecosystems. Despite its importance in seed dispersal, preservation and reconstruction of habitats, information on infectious agents that affect these animals is still incipient. The objective of this study was to detect natural Trypanosoma...

Tapirus terrestris of habitat suitability and evaluated how well represented the areas are within the current conservation system. The suitable area for T. terrestris with the most representative savanna landscapes being: (i) savannas (118,125 2.2%) of the suitable area was reported within Civil Society Nature Reserves. Our results highlight the ec...

The native savanna ecosystem of the Orinoquia region is the habitat of 50% of the wild ungulate species reported for Colom-bia. Over the last 20 years, this high species diversity has been strongly threatened by the human transformation of the natural land cover causing connectivity loss of the habitats. The Orinoquia region lacks a biological conn...

The high plains native savanna landscape (HPNSL) northeast of the Orinoco River is the habitat of 50% of the wild ungulate species (WUS) reported for Colombia. Over the last 20 years, this high species diversity has been strongly threatened by the accelerated human transformation of the natural land cover causing connectivity loss of the habitats....

Fires are recurrent in moist tropical savannas, but in recent decades, Neotropical forests have become more affected due to the increased frequency of fires and the extent of burned areas. Currently, there is still limited knowledge on whether and how these disturbance events generate changes in taxonomic and functional diversity that can ultimatel...

Fire is a natural agent with a paramount role in ecosystem functioning and biodiversity maintenance. Still, it can also act as a negative force against many ecosystems. Despite some knowledge of the interactions of fire and vegetation, there is no clear understanding of how different components of fire regimes (i.e., severity, history, or frequency...

Land use policies and planning in Latin America have been partially successful in halting deforestation yet have not stopped forest degradation. Here, we study the different stakeholders' perspectives of the drivers of forest degradation. We use Colombia as a case study for understanding synergies and trade-offs of the sustainable development goals...

Both fire and predators have strong influences on the population dynamics and behaviour of animals, and the effects of predators may either be strengthened or weakened by fire. However, knowledge of how fire drives or mediates predator-prey interactions is fragmented and has not been synthesised. Here, we review and synthesise knowledge of how fire...

Fire plays a dominant role in deforestation, particularly in the tropics, but the relative extent of transformations and influence of fire frequency on eventual forest loss remain unclear. Here, we analyze the frequency of fire and its influence on postfire forest trajectories between 2001 and 2018. We account for ~1.1% of Latin American forests bu...

Natural Reserves of the Civil Society (NRCS) play a fundamental role for the conservation of the mastofauna and its habitats in the Colombian Orinoquia and Guyana. The Omacha Foundation in the Bojonawi Natural Reserve-BNR, is carrying out a characterization and monitoring program for this taxonomic group. To date, 36 species, of non-flying aquatic...

Fire is a global disturbance that has a strong influence on biodiversity. Seasonal fires are common in neotropical savannas of South America, yet few studies have analyzed how the fauna of these habitats and nearby forests respond to fire. We evaluated the effects of fire on the community of non-volant small mammals in the Colombian llanos by compa...

Biodiversity faces many threats and these can interact to produce outcomes that may not be predicted by considering their effects in isolation. Habitat loss and fragmentation (hereafter 'fragmentation') and altered fire regimes are important threats to biodiversity, but their interactions have not been systematically evaluated across the globe. In...

Gallery forests are widespread in most tropical savanna landscapes creating a mosaic of grass dominated systems with tree components and forest patches. Interactions among water, nutrient availability, and wildfires have influenced the structure, patterns, and processes of these landscape systems and have shaped today’s biodiversity in the savanna–...

In the last decades, wildfires have burnt millions of hectares of tropical forests, resulting in strong negative environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts. It is thought that this trend is going to increase due to the interactions among climate change, vegetation conditions and the mismanagement of land use. The acknowledgment of the pol...
