Power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) testing is increasingly being adopted as a testing tool for grid integration of distributed energy resources with power electronic interfaces. Conventionally, these PHIL setups use the ideal-transformer-method (ITM) as an interface algorithm between the device-under-test (DUT) and the real-time simulation model. Th...

With increased installation of single-phase rooftop PV systems, in-house battery storages, and high-power plug-in loads (i.e. EVs) at single-phase residential sites, it is prevalent that more and more distribution systems are becoming severely unbalanced causing power quality problems and thermal risks at distribution substations. To solve this pro...

Recently, the penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) into electrical power systems is witnessing a large attention due to their inexhaustibility, environmental benefits, storage capabilities, lower maintenance and stronger economy, etc. Among these RESs, offshore wind power plants (OWPP) are ones of the most widespread power plants that hav...
Thesis
The past decade has seen a significant rise in proliferation of roof-top photovoltaic (PV) systems with storage units at residential sites. This has affected the way power system engineers and researchers have previously studied distribution systems as passive networks. With the introduction of these local distributed energy resources, a distributi...

The aim of this study was to analyze the cost and technological benefits of rice husk as boiler fuel by comparing it with primary boiler fuel like coal and furnace oil. Rice husk is a major agricultural waste that has the potential to produce clean energy. This study was based on the collection of data on boiler site, and measurements of stack emis...

A benchmark distribution system is developed for investigating control and energy management of distributed generation (DG) at a residential level in the form of three single-phase microgrids. The benchmark is derived from a typical distribution network architecture with common parameters found in North-America systems including wiring specificatio...
Data
This implementation takes into account the mathematical formation developed for intra- and inter-phase power management. LabView was used to develop a GUI type structure for the user to identify the power contribution from different DG units at the residential level.

A power control and management strategy for islanded residential microgrids is presented. A three-phase residential microgrid can be viewed as three separate single-phase systems. Within each phase, there are PV systems, battery storage devices and droop controlled dispatchable units. Connections among phases are made through back-to-back converter...
Conference Paper
A cooperative control and management strategy for islanded residential microgrids is presented in this paper. In addition to the loads, PV generation and battery storage are considered within each phase using droop control schemes. The proposed strategy uses a two-tiered management scheme to coordinate intra- and inter-phase power management. Each...

Waste-to-energy (WTE) is a viable option for municipal solid waste (MSW) management and a renewable energy source. MSW is a chronic problem in Saudi Arabia and more specifically in Saudi Urban areas. The MSW practices in KSA are simply done by collecting the waste and dumping it in open landfill sites. KSA is considering WTE as a potential renewabl...

In this paper, we present six subspace decomposition based methods for joint time of arrival (TOA) and frequency of arrival (FOA) estimation of multiple incident sources. These are LU-TLS, QR-TLS, direct TSQR-TLS, direct TSLU-TLS, parallel TSQR-TLS, and parallel TSLU-TLS. The direct and parallel TSQR/TSLU-TLS are recently developed methods in subsp...

This paper presents a coordinated control of a STATCOM and a Power System Stabilizer (PSS) for damping the low frequency electromechanical oscillations in a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system. A model is developed which is subsequently linearized to form a state space model. The STATCOM control is based on modulation index and the phase angl...

The Eastern Province of the Kingdom Saudi Arabia is the most important region economically and has a total population of about 6 million. The region witnessed massive socio-economic development over the last four decades which has produced substantial increase in municipal solid waste (MSW) generation and electricity demand. This research assesses...

The adaptive pitch control system for wind generators is utilized in variable speed doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) systems. An adaptive neural network generates optimized controller gains for pitch control. The pitch controller parameters are generated using intelligent differential evolution, a type of genetic algorithm. A back propagation...

Riyadh City, the Capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), has experienced far-reaching changes in spatial and socio-economic patterns during the last few decades, supported by huge crude oil revenue. The changes have produced far-reaching increase in municipal solid waste (MSW) generation and electricity demand. Open landfilling is the dominan...

In this paper we present two computationally efficient methods for computing the past and future input-output data for subspace system identification. The proposed methods employ Direct and Parallel QR decomposition for tall and skinny matrix where many more rows than columns are involved. Data matrix of deterministic and stochastic system has been...

Extraction of maximum energy from wind and transferring it to the grid with high efficiency are challenging problems. To this end, this study proposes a smart pitch controller for a wind turbine-doubly fed induction generator system using a Differential Evolution (DE) based adaptive neural network. The nominal weights for the back-propagation neura...

Easy Path Wavelet Transform (EPWT), a wavelet based compression technique that averages in adaptive neighborhoods of image intensity points, is utilized for the sparse representation of two-dimensional data. EPWT, when applied upon images, operates along the permutations of original image indices exploiting the local correlations in an uncomplicate...

This is the first time that I had submitted a paper to a special issue of IET GTD "Future Distribution Grids and Integrated Energy Systems (IES)". The submission deadline was 31st March 2021. I wanted to know if any researcher here submitted their paper to this special issue or if anyone had experience with the timeline for their first review. Thanks
