Providing and getting data in ITS and transport management is getting more and more important. Therefore the construction of a data warehouse is very important. A literature analyses was conducted to identify the main aspects that are important in the development of a data warehouse. We can conclude that data warehouses can have different roles, oc...
Vehicle route planning and navigation systems aim to provide the most beneficial routes to their users while disregarding the impact on the liveability of the surrounding residential areas. Therefore, future integration of route choice behaviour by route planners and measures to improve liveability and safety standards should be pursued. The Spatia...
The MOVE project deals with the collection and analysis of crowd behaviour data. The main goals of the project are to collect data through the use of mobile phones and to develop new technologies to process and mine the collected data for crowd behaviour analysis. This paper describes the different steps in the development of tracking applications...
A success factor in the future implementation of new in-vehicle technologies is in understanding how users will experience and respond to these devices. Although it is recognised that acceptance and acceptability are important, consistency in the definition of acceptability, and how it can be measured, is absent. In this chapter we focus on the soc...
Overheidsmaatreg...
Each day, an average of over 116 people die from traffic accidents in the European Union. One out of three fatalities is estimated to be the result of speeding. The current state of technology makes it possible to make speeding more difficult, or even impossible, by placing intelligent speed limiters (so called ISA devices) in vehicles. Although th...
The MOVE application focuses on the tracking and tracing of crowd and travel behaviour data by using a combination of the available sensors (GPS, Wi-Fi, cell, Bluetooth) in Smartphones. A novelty in tracing is that the application can be used as a passive logging tool or as an interactive platform in collecting additional information by a mobile su...
In-Vehicle route planning is used to support a drivertextquoteright s route choice and to guide a driver to a destination. The suggested route takes less account of environmental aspects, which could lead to cut-through traffic. The Flanders Spatial Structure plan describes certain categories of roads for the optimization of the road network based...
Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) involves an in-vehicle system, which supports the driver in not exceeding the speed limit. Inappropriate speed or speeding is a major cause of road traffic accidents and strongly relates to the outcome of an accident (research indicates that in Europe one third of all fatal accidents is caused by inappropriate spe...
Speeding is generally considered to be a major cause of road traffic accidents. In-car speed assistance systems aim at reducing speeding. Several trials with different types of in-car speed assistance systems, in particular intelligent speed assistance (ISA), have shown that ISA can be an effective way to reduce speeding. A basic condition for achi...
To have knowledge about the acceptability of Intelligent Transport systems (ITS) is most beneficial for the development of supported implementation strategies. So far, different theories and methods, also stemming from other domains, have been used to define and conceptualize the notion of acceptability. In a previous paper, we developed a theoreti...
The support of by Belgian and Dutch drivers of in-vehicle speed assistance systems Vlassenroot, S.; Brookhuis, K.; De Mol, J.; Marchau, V.; Witlox, F. Abstract: This paper focuses on the issue of acceptability of ISA. It is based on a large-scale survey of 6370 individuals in Belgium (Flanders region) and 1158 persons in the Netherlands. First resu...
The MOVE project focuses on the collection and analyses of crowd behavior data. The two main goals of the project are first, the collection of data through mobile phones. The second goal is to develop new technologies to process and mine the collected data for crowd behaviour analysis. The technology will allow to make advanced interpretations of h...

Several trials with different types of ISA have shown that ISA can be an efficient and effective way to reduce speed and speeding. In our research we ask the question will there be acceptability of ISA by the public? Different methods and theories were used to distil the most relevant determinants that could influence acceptability. Based on these...

Speed management is a set of measures to limit negative effects of speed in a transport system. One of the solutions to solve speeding is making the road transport system more intelligent by implementing intelligent speed assistance (ISA). This thesis provides more insight in the factors that can determine the acceptability of ISA by (potential) dr...

Title: A Speed limit database for speed management Subtitle: Technical and policy feasibility aspects A major barrier in the use of in-vehicle (Intelligent Transport Systems) ITS is the lack of correct road information. Following the various pilot projects held in Europe, the initiative was launched to investigate the development of a speed limit d...
Intelligent Speed Adaptation From Trial Support to Public Support Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) is a beneficial Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to increase road safety. In 2002, thirty-four cars and three buses were equipped with the textquotedblleft active accelerator pedal.textquotedblright The results showed that the pedal assisted them...
As the first steps on ISA in Belgium are taken, the need for an accurate speed limit database is growing. Based on studies to reveal available speed limit information on higher and lower (municipalities) level, and taking into account European guidelines and standards, a dynamic speed limit database is being developed. Furthermore a framework is co...
Traffic is one of the main causes of the most serious environmental problems worldwide. Accidents, photochemical air pollution, climate change, air quality and noise levels are some of these factors. The challenge of today is how to reduce these negatives effects in the coming years. As textquotedblleft sustainable developmenttextquotedblright} and...
This report proceeds on the report textquotedblleft ITS and traffic safety, Intelligent Transport Systemstextquotedblright (RA-MOW-2008-007) and expands on the possibilities of ITS systems for the enhancement of traffic safety around intersections equipped with traffic lights. Nowadays, new technologies, such as ITS, could create alternative solutions for a better road safety. But how sure can we be whether ITS will be accepted by the people? Measuring public support of road safety defines the degree of acceptance people have to adapt or not to adapt to the desired behaviour. The focus of this paper is defining what is m...
Increasing road safety is one of the main goals in traffic policy. Measures to increase.(sustainable) road safety can be divided into infrastructural measures, which make road infrastructure and traffic situations more understandable and transparent for road users; vehicle technologies, like intelligent transport systems that increase the safety of...
