Stabilirea stării ecologice a ecosistemelor acvatice din R.B.D.D., se face pe baza elementelor de calitate biologice, ţinând cont de indicatorii hidromorfologici, chimici, fizico-chimici şi de poluanţi specifici care influenţează indicatorii biologici. Evaluarea acestor elemente poate arăta prezenţa condiţiilor naturale, alterării minore ale acestora sau amploarea impactului antropic şi respectiv starea calităţii corpurilor de apă într-o anumită perioadă de timp. Stabilirea stării de calitate a diferitelor categorii de ape se face numai pe baza indicatorilor de calitate corelaţi cu diferitele utilizări ale apei, din legislaţia în vigoare. Elementele de calitate chimică şi fizico-chimică din grupa "Salinitate", respectiv calciu, magneziu, sodiu, potasiu, reprezintă substanţe de origine naturală şi nu indică poluare. Acolo unde poluarea chimică este responsabilă pentru deteriorarea stării ecologice trebuie să se stabilească poluantul sau poluanţii de natură chimică care constituie cauza deteriorării, în vederea acţionării asupra nivelului poluantului pentru reducerea impactului, evidenţiat de depăşirea standardului de calitate. Acest proiect este o continuare a monitorizării pe termen lung a comunităților biologice (fitoplactonul, fauna nevertebrată, flora acvatică și ihtiofaună), împreună cu parametrii fizico-chimici din ecosistemele acvatice reprezentative ale Rezervației Biosferei Delta Dunării, pentru a se putea evidenția schimbările în diversitatea specifică şi implicit în calitatea apei.
