Introduction
I am interested in psychometry, factor analysis, personality, intelligence, personality disorders. I discovered an error in factor analysis and worked out a flawless principle and a new statistical procedure whose results are more valid and interpretable. I am also interested in anomalistics, such as parapsychology and infuences of space weather on human behaviour.

Preface Why is factor analysis considered an ailing model in this book? I deem Simple Structure, a basic principle for factor rotation, introduced by Thurstone, as mistaken. In his foreword, Paul Barrett provides grounds for my view. I should add that two detrimental conditions have prolonged the methodical ailment: Not being able to diagnose the...

The study introduces varimin, a novel factorial rotation which, unlike Thurstone’s principle of simple structure, attempts to model complexity. Varimin-rotated factors are conceived as components of functional structure. Simple structure- (e.g., varimax-) rotated factors are conceived as representing indeterminate clusters of those components. An e...

Chapter 1 : Criticism of Thurstone’s “Simple Structure” . The present study aims at disclosing a methodological prejudice which has misled factor analysis since its beginning. Simple structure, the guiding principle for factor rotation (Thurstone, 1935/1947), is regarded as a questionable dogma. TheThurstone principle impedes the discovery of laten...

Basic components of personality. Factor analysis with novel paradigma. Thurstone‟s principle of simple structure is rejected and replaced by its converse, the principle of complex structure. Varimax, the popular simple structure rotation of factors, is replaced by varimin, a novel procedure taking account of the complexity of investigated variabl...

In one of his careful astro-statistical studies, Arno Müller and Günter Menzer (1993) reported correlations between infants' deaths in families of German nobles and Saturn positions at the infants' birth hours. This result went unnoticed. Another neglected result of a well-controlled study is that of Timm and Köberl (1986) on astrologers. These maj...

Extraordinary hit rates from multiple choice tests, obtained by participants alone in their homes, are ambiguous. On the one hand, their feats might reflect psi power manifesting itself better under informal home than under lab conditions. Yet hit excesses obtained without control might also be due to negligent or fraudulent conduct. One way out of...

Peter Brugger & Kirsten Taylor (B&T) regard positive extrasensory perception (ESP) test results as methodical artifacts. In their view, sequences of guessing, e.g. of symbol cards, being non-random, overlap with finite sequences of non-random targets, and surpluses of hits from chance are deemed to be due to correlated non- randomness. The present...

Responds to the comments of J. Milton and R. Wiseman (see record 2001-17499-008) concerning the authors' article (see record 2001-17499-007) criticizing Milton's and Wiseman's study (see record 1999-05876-001) based on the meta-analysis of D. Bem and C. Honorton (1994), which yielded evidence that the ganzfeld is a suitable method for demonstrat...

J. Milton and R. Wiseman (1999) attempted to replicate D. Bem and C. Honorton's (1994) meta-analysis, which yielded evidence that the ganzfeld is a suitable method for demonstrating anomalous communication. Using a database of 30 ganzfeld and autoganzfeld studies, Milton and Wiseman's meta-analysis yielded an effect size (ES) of only 0.013 (Stouffe...

In 1997, Jean Dommanget gave an account of investigations on the Mars effect claim conducted by the Belgian skepticscommittee PARA. Gauquelin had shown that their data revealed a strong Mars effect. Dom- manget rejects Gauquelin's claim, alleging justification through the commit- tee's "model of the mechanism." The present paper scrutinizes the com...

The regularities in the creation of outstanding works of painting and poetry, as well as scientific discoveries over a period 1400-1800 was estimated quantitatively. The occurrence of an about 10-year periodicity of the creative activity in West-European and Chinese painting, poetry and science is shown. As a rule, the peaks of creative work in Chi...

An earlier study (Ertel, 1988) showed that original evidence for Gauquelin's Mars effect with eminent athletes (Gauquelin and Gauqelin 1970) was based on an incomplete data sample. When athletes initially discarded by Gauquelin were included the Mars effect declined. The present study bears on a more subtle effect of the same bias. Gauquelin's orig...

In Fuzeau-Braesch [Astrologie: La Preuve par Deux (1992a) and Personality and Individual Differences 13, 1135–1144 (1992b)] the parents of 238 pairs of twins matched brief astrological descriptions with their twins' personalities and achieved 68.5% hits, very significantly better than the 50% expected by chance. The author concluded that astrology...

According to Gauquelin's eminence hypothesis, planetary effects increase with increasing professional renown. The author's former findings, however, did not always support this hypothesis. In some cases planetary ef- fects went down, or first up and then down, with increasing eminence. Miiller's recent unexpected results with very eminent professio...

16 Ss read aloud affirmative and negative sentences presented in a sentence memory task. While reading each sentence, they performed either an associative or a dissociative manual task (putting two halves of a square together or taking them apart). Following presentation of a block of 8 sentences the Ss were given the sentence subjects as prompts a...

The purpose of this study is twofold: (a) to test the hypothesis that the well known second order factors of personality inventories, extraversion (E′), neuroticism (N) and Nigniewitzki's rigidity (NR) are closely related to Osgood's factors of connotative meaning, activitiy (A), evaluation (E) und potency (P), and (b) to find empirical evidence fo...

Based upon the assumption that the independence of psychic functions is expressed better by the intersituational covariances than by the interindividual covariances a new factor analytic design was developed for a set of semantic differentials. The empirical confirmation of the design is seen in the high correlation between factor loadings and (non...

Kurtz, Nienhuys, and Sandhu (1997), instead of explaining the anomaly in their planetary data that we discovered (Ertel and Irving, 1997), launch a broadside attack against all claims of Gauquelin-type correlations. In our rejoinder, we provide evidence for highly significant Mars-effect re-sults based on the skeptics' own samples. Regarding CSICOP...

Correlations between birth counts and planetary positions (Gauquelin planetary effects) have been given "a powerful explanation" by Geoffrey Dean's construct of "attribution" (Dean, 2000). In Dean's view, Gauquelin correlations are "man- made", thus "artifacts". Dean's conjecture is imaginative, yet it provokes demurs. Of his three ways of "attribu...

45 female highschool students, tested singly, were asked to perform a simple movement while trying to have an image of a picture presented shortly before. Ss watched their images because they had to report on any change with them, while E secretely watched Ss' movements in order to measure their extension. There were three movement patterns: an “ap...

The problem of sound symbolism first was treated as a problem of definition. Three concepts were differentiated: Impressive sound symbolism, sound character (potential sound symbolism) and expressive sound symbolism. The results of four experiments are reported, the first dealing with a methodological question, the remaining three with the sound ch...

The hypothesis that sociometric choice behavior is intimately related to one or several factors of the factorial trias Valenz (“evaluation”), Potenz (“potency”) und Erregung (“activity”) was supported by this correlational study. It has been shown that the standard sociometric questions are correlated with Valenz. Certain other questions (leader ch...

This research was undertaken in order to find out (1) whether the socio-cultural background of S has any influence on how he perceives and judges other people, (2) whether the thematic emphasis of his judgments mirrors the culturally determined aspects of his personality. Specifically, it was intended, by analyzing the social judgments of a group o...
