It is desirable that children engage in reading and writing beyond school. What is known about various individual and environmental variables that may be related to children’s leisure reading and writing? And how strong is existing evidence? Our scoping review aims at mapping research on leisure reading and writing in first- to fourth-graders. Usin...

Systematic reviews are the method of choice to synthesize research evidence. To identify main topics (so-called hot spots) relevant to large corpora of original publications in need of a synthesis, one must address the “three Vs” of big data (volume, velocity, and variety), especially in loosely defined or fragmented disciplines. For this purpose,...

Cultural capital plays a strong role in determining eduactional and vocational success (Bourdieu, 1987). According to Bourdieu, individuals enter the educational system with different endowments of cultural capital, depending on their social background. These differences are not equalized over the educational career, but rather exacerbated, because...

Teachers’ religious or worldview beliefs are often assumed to impact their way of teaching. Public debates in Western countries about teachers wearing headscarfs, about evangelical science teachers refusing to teach evolution theory or about confessional requirements of teachers at faith-based schools indicate that this assumption has societal and political implications. There is also a fierce debate on whether connections between teachers’ religious or worldview beliefs and their professional thinking and acting should be viewed as legitimate at public (state) schools that are obliged to be ‘neutral’ regarding religion and worldviews – while there is still scarce empirical evidence on this topic. Thus, empirical evidence regarding links between teachers’ religious or worldview beliefs on the one hand and their profession-related beliefs on the other hand is needed. The aim of this research project is to examine these links for the German context.

Many women in Germany are single parents, unemployed and without a well-founded professional qualification. How can their quality of life be improved, and at the same time, their professional integration achieved? How can they get involved in processes of empowerment? In a design-based research (DBR) project, we are evaluating and accompanying an intervention aimed at this target group, sponsored by the European Social Fund (ESF). The aim of the project is to develop and document good practice in the application of “group conferencing” as a method of empowerment. We pursue this aim by applying multiple coupled DBR cycles.

Recent developments in digitization may be seen as threats, however, they also provide the opportunity to foster a positive relationship of people with their communities (place attachment) via participatory regional development. This may be particularly positive for sustainable development of rural areas at risk of demographic decline. The project’s aim is to synthesize, systematize and analyse Europe-wide examples of ‘good practice’ related to digital strategies and instruments on this issue. These examples will be compiled, resulting in an orientation framework that is being made available in the form of a digital toolbox for further use in regional development. The research questions are: how can digitization contribute to a positive interpretation of rural areas or rural identification? How can the potential of digitization be used for participatory regional development? In particular, how can place attachment be strengthened? And how may contributors only digitally present be involved? How can place attachment counter depopulation and migration? And how can digital tools be used to successfully address pivotal challenges of rural regions such as brain drain and youth drain? Which strategies have already been successfully pursued based on such questions? What criteria of good practice for participatory digital regional development result from examples available in Europe? By addressing these questions, the project will provide a deeper insight into patterns and processes of place attachment in times of digitization and demographic change. At the same time, it provides a toolbox for the target-oriented design of programs for rural regions. Given the lower carbon footprint of rural populations, this also contributes to sustainable development.
