Introduction
In addition to planning-scientific approaches (using GIS-based methods), I envisage a theory-based landscape research, in which the consequences on landscape and potential land use conflicts resulting from the need for sustainable development are analysed. The presently conducted analyses on energy landscapes with less than two degrees global warming are exemplary for this research.

In order to achieve the Paris climate target of limiting global warming to below 2 °C compared to pre-industrial levels, the German government has launched the Climate Action Plan 2050. According to this plan, Germany is to achieve climate neutrality by 2045, which will require a comprehensive transformation of the energy sector, involving the grad...
Policy Highlights
To achieve the recommendation stated in the chapter title, we propose the following: Ensure the follow-up and implementation of EU policy measures, including by conducting quality assessments and introducing national community energy targets.
Foster institutional allies at local and regional levels.
Provide access to and capacitie...
With the Paris Agreement, it was decided to limit global warming to below two degrees. Hence, national governments are currently confronted with the challenge of implementing concrete climate protection measures. This poses a major challenge especially for Germany, as the phase-out of low-emission nuclear energy additionally increases the pressure...
The energy transition (Energiewende) represents a fundamental transition in the generation and distribution structure of the German energy system. Various support mechanisms, such as the Renewable Energies Act (REA, EGG), have enabled new semi-professional plant operators to enter the energy market. Location decisions were de-professionalized and t...
Potential spatio-temporal patterns of renewable energies that take into account international climate protection strategies have been neither analysed nor visualised exactly in terms of their landscape complexity. Furthermore, it is unclear what land uses would be prevalent in new energy landscapes, due to a lack of restrictions, and which social c...
The aim of this study is to gain a better understanding of what characterizes energy landscapes in general and to what extent they are an expression of social inequalities and injustices in the specific case of the German Energiewende. In the sense of a review, the central findings will be integrated into the spatial concept ‘production of space’ b...
vre's spatial concept is well suited to expose the powerfully enforced and socially unbalanced territorial structures of energy landscapes and to distinguish them from the symbolic, emotional, and idealistic reference points that arise from the everyday life in these landscapes. It becomes clear that infrastructure measures for climate protection o...
The number of actors in the German Energy Transition as
well as the planning complexity increases and new spatial implications
emerge in contrast to the conventional energy system. In planning processes
for Renewable Energy Technologies mostly economic approaches are chosen, but
simultaneously the number of social conflicts related to wind power pl...
Our central target is to show that capitalism is not only much more robust to crises than presumed by its critics, but also features promising capabilities with regard to solving the environmental crisis. To elaborate this thesis, we analyse how far capitalism can survive given the end of fossil energy carriers and may maintain its productivity und...

The area-intensive deployment of renewable energies inland has led to controversial discussions about the implications of regenerative energy systems regarding landscape on the one hand while on the other hand the most profitable sites are mostly already occupied. Driven by the aims of climate protection and fuelled by technological progress, polit...
The implementation of many small power stations compensates the closing of powerful large power plants as part of the German Energy Transition is compensated. It is unclear how site decisions are made, which actors are involved, and which economic, ecological, and social consequences occur. The quantitative study consists of a written postal survey...
GIS-based approaches for the optimal expansion of renewable energies are characterized by a strong dominance of engineering-oriented perspectives. It is acknowledged that combining techno-economic site analysis with social aspects can be beneficial for acceptance. However, this strategy's success is limited if essential theoretical perceptions obta...
This study precisely analyzes the solar potential on roofs of residential buildings in the city of Hamburg as a function of the city’s settlement structure. Hamburg’s solar cadastre is critically evaluated with regard to rooftops, buildings, and settlement types as well as building alignments. Based on building ground plans, building and settlement...
By now, there are numerous high-quality studies discussing the
incompatibility of the development of renewable energies with the
preservation of landscape. However, no further insight is provided as to how
a holistic spatial integration of renewable energies may be achieved. Yet
the ambitious aim of Germany's government of increasing the percentage...

Standortal...
Background
An oversupply of solar radiation in Northern Africa as well as high energy consumption in the economic centers of Central Europe give reason to an international cross-linking of regenerative power supply. A fundamental precondition for this purpose is the development of high-capacity power lines. By this means only, the energy can be eco...
Annual corrective actions concerning the declining structure of gratification of the Renewable Energies Act (EEG), spatial limitations due to restrictive regional planning, opposition by nature and homeland conservation organizations, as well as the extension of the terms for nuclear power plants spatially confine a system of renewable energies. Fa...
Following Richardson and using results of Kesten on First-passage
