Introduction
I am a social science scholar with a focus on methodology and a special interest in digital mediatization as well as reception and use of audio, sound and music in media and communication. I conduct mixed-methods research in this area. My current research is on explaining and predicting the perceived symbolic meaning of popular music titles by combining theory, social research and music information retrieval.

Within the last 100 years, everyday music listening has undergone several changes in terms of the material audio technologies employed. From the gramophone to nowadays streaming multimedia gadgets, a lot of media devices and services have emerged and disappeared. Nevertheless, many older appliances still populate our media environments today and ar...

Music listening in everyday life is nowadays typically characterized by trans-media use: Most young adults in Germany use several different technologies for accessing, storing, sharing, and listening to their music. Nevertheless, there exist two relatively homogenous large music-related media user groups within the younger birth-cohorts: The ‘Digit...

Our contribution addresses popular music as essential part of media entertainment offerings. Prior works explained liking for specific music titles in ‘push scenarios’ (radio programs, music recommendation, curated playlists) by either drawing on personal genre preferences, or on findings about ‘cognitive side effects’ leading to a preference drift...

We describe the development of a computational model predicting listener-perceived expressions of music in branding contexts. Representative ground truth from multi-national online listening experiments was combined with machine learning of music branding expert knowledge, and audio signal analysis toolbox outputs. A mixture of random forest and tr...

Individualization of head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) can improve the quality of binaural applications with respect to the localization accuracy, coloration, and other aspects. Using anthropometric features (AFs) of the head, neck, and pinna for individualization is a promising approach to avoid elaborate acoustic measurements or numerical s...

Theoretical reasoning and empirical research on modes of listening exhibits a long tradition within musicology, sound studies and cultural sociology. However, in spite of the importance of the auditory domain in everyday media consumption and the similarity of theoretical and methodological challenges, listening modes have found only minor interest...

Statistical significance testing is a central technique for everyday empirical‐quantitative work in media psychology. Its most common form, the null hypothesis significance test represents a well‐established method of legitimating knowledge claims drawn from statistical analyses based on random samples. Nevertheless, intended epistemological meanin...

Rooms are not perceptual objects themselves; they can only be perceived through their effect on the presented signal, the sound source, and the human receiver. An overview of different approaches to identify the qualities and the dimensions of “room acoustical impression” will be provided, that have resulted in psychological measuring instruments f...

Our contribution involves the development and validation of a standardised terminology for the description and comparison of music branding communication aims. We initially review relevant literature from marketing and music psychology research, and then carry out two empirical studies. In the first, an expert focus group develops an inventory of c...

A round robin was conducted to evaluate the state of the art of room acoustic modeling software both in the physical and perceptual realms. The test was based on six acoustic scenes highlighting specific acoustic phenomena and for three complex, “real-world” spatial environments. The results demonstrate that most present simulation algorithms gener...

Background. Musical meaning is an ongoing concern of psychologists and musicologists. What does music convey is a question reflected in large scientific accounts. Another focal point of this debate is how music conveys meaning that is perceived by listeners. In this empirical work, we focus on the latter question within the context of music brandin...

A database of 35 virtual room models was created that can serve as a ground truth for the future development of room acoustical parameters beyond ISO 3382-1. Some of the room models are based on existing performance venues, however without yielding a perfect match of measured and simulated acoustical parameters. Others are artificial designs which...

Within academic music research, ‘musical expertise’ is often employed as a ‘moderator variable’ when conducting empirical studies on music listening. Prevalent conceptualizations typically conceive of it as a bundle of cognitive skills acquired through formal musical education. By implicitly drawing on the paradigm of the Western classical live con...
