This special issue of Documenta delves into the reciprocal relationship between ‘Theater and Law,’ establishing an interdisciplinary space for justice that transcends conventional legal boundaries. In contrast to traditional, rigid judicial frameworks that revolve around accusing and sentencing clearly defined defendants, the performing and visual...

The fifth volume of the Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde (1723-1737) by Bernard Picart and Jean Frederic Bernard played a significant role in shaping the perception of Islam in the early 18th-century Dutch Republic and Europe. Kishwar Rizvi has argued that it challenged stereotypes by introducing novel comparative per...
2023 marks the 300 th anniversary of the publication of the early eighteenth-century book series Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde, a work on all the world's religions known to Europe at that time and originally published in seven volumes between 1723 and 1737 in Amsterdam. Edited by the exiled French Huguenot Jean Fre...
Between 1723 and 1743, the French bookseller Jean Frederic Bernard, who had emigrated to Amsterdam, published the seven-volume Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde, richly illustrated by Bernard Picart. Earlier research argued that Picart and Bernard are important predecessors of the emerging scientific fields of anthropo...
The following article is a re ection of a conversation I had with Chokri Ben Chikha about his perspective as both an artist and a historian on the presence of colonial statues in the streetscape, iconoclasm, and the possible conciliatory role of the artist in this debate. The artwork is by the German photographer and visual artist Oliver Leu, who h...
Although historical research into twentieth-century theatrical tribunals is widespread, the recurring theme of justice in contemporary performance practices remains largely unexplored. However, an increasing number of twenty-first-century artists have begun relying on structures of the court. By creating theatrical tribunals, these artists try to c...
In this article, I analyse the ways in which Maria Lucia Cruz Correia, Rebekka de Wit and Anoek Nuyens rethink the relationship between performance and ecopolitics. With their tribunal theatre performances Voice of Nature: The Trial (2019) and The Shell Trial (2020), the artists strive to reconfigure the dramaturgy of the courtroom on stage and aim...
When “All rise!” is being exclaimed in a courtroom, the attendees know they are supposed to stand up for the judges to enter. When these judges have made a decision at the end, the defendant becomes either guilty or not guilty. Yet, in a theatre hall, language lacks the specific coercive and punitive power to change reality directly. Nevertheless,...
