In the context of transformative energy policy frameworks, such as the German “Energiewende”, state and federal agencies, regulators, and country planners need reliable data on the energy system infrastructure to make substantiated decisions about line routing and extension. The decision-making processes are accompanied by interdisciplinary researc...
Bioenergy carriers are used in different energy sectors. While the bioenergy supply from energy crops is limited, there is still reasonable unused potential from residues and waste. Improved qualities are necessary with regard to energy density, storability, energy content, flexible application, and related emissions. Especially solid and gaseous b...
Epigenetics is one of a group of newly developing technosciences whose applications are just starting to leave the sphere of pure science. What is currently known about epigenetics is not only the basis for grand visions, but also for first applications especially in the medical sector. Epigenetics is therefore already of relevance to our daily liv...
Within the last decade, epigenetics has developed as a branch of molecular genetics and is currently experiencing a true hype. One of the most fascinating but also scaring findings of epigenetics is the confirmation of the old presumption that the environment can have lasting effects on gene expression – maybe even into the next generation(s). Thus...
Modern epigenetics unites scientists from life sciences, organic chemistry as well as computer and engineering sciences to find an answer to the question of how environmental influences can have a lasting effect on gene expression, maybe even into the next generations. This volume examines from an interdisciplinary perspective the ethical, legal an...
The discourse on the fundamental issues raised by synthetic biology, such as biosafety and biosecurity, intellectual property, environmental consequences and ethical and societal implications, is still open and controversial. This, coupled with the potential and risks the field holds, makes it one of the hottest topics in technology assessment toda...
Being part of molecular genetics, epigenetics deals with the regulatory mechanisms of gene-activity beyond the DNA sequence. The allegorical “being above the genes” of these mechanisms has revolutionised scientific theories and affected society’s way of dealing with the stocks of genetic knowledge as well as the public discourse on it. To date ther...

Among the new and emerging technosciences, synthetic biology (SB) is one of the hottest topics for technology assessment. The aim of SB is to be more than advanced biotechnology, developing biology as a substrate for engineering by adapting concepts developed in the fields of engineering. The visions of SB offer enormous opportunities which are cou...
Bericht von der Werkstatttagung der Evangelischen Akademie Loccum zu Partizipation
Loccum, 28.–30. Januar 2014
The chapter of Fleischer, Jahnel and Seitz points out that the current concept of toxicological risk assessment in the field of nanotechnology (in particular that referred to manufactured particulate nanomaterials (MPNs)), which is based on conventional expert-based chemical risk assessment procedure, is too narrow. We analyse various proposals, su...
The Citizens Dialogues on Future Technologies (CDFT) marked a certain ‘participatory turn’ in Germany. Here, we take a closer look at the CDFT, their methodology, their topics and what such a large participatory process can entail for technology assessment. Throughout the CDFT different topics showed interesting changes in how the participants disc...

Different approaches have been adopted for assessing the potential risks
of conventional chemicals and products for human health. In general, the
traditional paradigm is a toxicological-driven chemical-by-chemical
approach, focusing on single toxic endpoints. Scope and responsibilities
for the development and implementation of a risk assessment con...
Circadian clocks can be entrained by light-dark or temperature cycles. In the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, 12h changes in temperature between 18°C and 28°C synchronize its clock. Both subunits of the circadian RNA-binding protein CHLAMY1, named C1 and C3, are able to integrate temperature information. C1 gets hyper-phosphorylated in cells...
The two subunits of the circadian RNA-binding protein CHLAMY1 from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii are involved in maintaining period (C1 subunit) and phase (C3 subunit) of the circadian clock. C1 coregulates the level of C3. Overexpression of C1 causes a parallel increase in C3. Both subunits can also integrate temperature information, resulting in hype...
The circadian RNA-binding protein CHLAMY1 from the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii consists of two subunits named C1 and C3. Changes in the C1 level cause arrhythmicity of the phototaxis rhythm, while alterations in the level of C3 lead to acrophase shifts. Thus, CHLAMY1 is involved in maintaining period and phase of the circadian clock. Here,...
The RNA-binding protein CHLAMY1 from the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was shown to interact specifically and strongly with U[[greater than or equal to]7]-repeat sequences that are situated in the 3'-UTRs of several mRNAs (Mittag, 1996; Waltenberger et al., 2001). Some of these encode proteins of nitrogen metabolism such as plastidic glutami...
The physiology of the circadian (daily) clock has been well studied in the unicellular eukaryote Chlamy- domonas reinhardtii. Circadian rhythms of phototaxis, chemotaxis, cell division, UV sensitivity, and adher- ence to glass have been characterized in this green alga. Circadian phototaxis was even shown to operate in outer space! The related phen...

PACITA was a four-year EU financed project under FP7 aimed at increasing the capacity and enhancing the institutional foundation for knowledge-based policy-making on issues involving science, technology and innovation, mainly based upon the diversity of practices in Parliamentary Technology Assessment (PTA). The key practices in focus are interactive in the sense that they engage science, civil society organizations, stakeholders, citizens, parliaments and/or governments directly in the activities in order to activate different kinds of knowledge, engage the actors, create common ownership to the results and enhance the communication between the societal actors. http://www.pacitaproject.eu/
