Many universities are becoming more entrepreneurial by supporting spin-off activities of students and staff, installing entrepreneurship programs and creating networks with local entrepreneurs. But how do these activities affect university graduates’ employment choices? By utilizing different data sources, this question is addressed in the present...

a b s t r a c t This paper presents evidence on biased voting by jurors from the Warsaw Pact countries who ranked high-level chess games. This bias is observed only for jurors from Eastern countries, not for those from the West (NATO), and most interestingly, it disappears after the collapse of the Warsaw Pact in 1989.

A considerable body of work highlights the relevance of collaborative research, contract research, consulting and informal relationships for university-industry knowledge transfer. We present a systematic review of research on academic scientists’ involvement in these activities to which we refer as ‘academic engagement’. Apart from extracting find...
We introduce a competitive framing in the mini-ultimatum game utilizing chess puzzles. Therein, our chess playing participants accept low offers significantly more often compared to a neutral framing. We conclude that in familiar competitive surroundings egoistic behavior is more acceptable.
As public research institutions are increasingly pressured to transfer research results to industry, evaluation of their performance is not only based on their scientific output but also on their commercialization success. Although it is well known that research cooperation activities are an important channel of knowledge transfer, the knowledge ab...
Studies on academic spin-off companies have shown that the researchers’ scientific potential, experience and established networks with other scientists or companies affect entrepreneurial activity. Most studies investigate official data such as patents and citations or qualitatively study a research group or spin-off formation. Only a few studies f...
We examine whether scientists employed in foreign countries and foreign-educated native researchers are more “entrepreneurial”
than their “domestic” counterparts. We conjecture that foreign-born and foreign-educated scientists possess broader scientific
skills and social capital, which increases their likelihood that they will start their own compa...
In this study we investigate the factors that shape the attitudes of scientists toward starting their own business or working in a private sector firm. The analysis is based on data collected from scientists working in the German Max Planck Society, a research institution devoted to basic science. We find that the scientists' evaluations of the att...
Since the end of the eighties technology transfer from universities has been the focus of intensive academic research in the USA (see e.g. Jaffe and Lerner 2001, Jensen and Thursby 2001, Thursby & Thursby, 2002). Empirical studies show that the scientific potential, the ex-perience and the age of scientists, networks with other scientists in resear...
The aim of this study is to examine whether scientists employed in foreign countries and researchers who returned from extant research experience abroad are more entrepreneurial than their peers. We conjecture that foreign- born and foreign-educated scientists possess broader scientific skills and social capital which positively impact on their lik...
