Gear geometry as defined in ISO 1328-1:2013 [1] requires specific elements of the gear (i.e. profile, lead or helix, and pitch) to be considered independently. This ISO standard is used in conjunction with ISO TS 10064-1 [2], which defines approved gear inspection methods. Since the standard does not currently establish any optical technologies to...
The growth of optical measurement techniques in recent years has introduced the possibility of allowing several alternative methods of non-contact gear measurement to be utilised. Optical methods offer many advantages over tactile ones such as the potential to evaluate delicate surfaces quickly and to measure the whole area of the gear tooth flank...
Being able to assess the amount of uncertainty locally associated to dense point clouds generated by measurement can help investigate the relations between the metrological performance of a chosen measuring technology, and the local geometric and surface properties of the measurand geometry. In previous research it was demonstrated that spatial sta...
During the past decade, additive manufacturing (AM) has grown from a promising but immature technology to a tool that is increasingly being accepted in manufacturing facilities around the globe. While researchers working in AM focussed on process optimisation, precision engineers dedicated time to research installing determinism and sustainability...
This project is concerned with investigating various optical methods of gear measurement. The UK National Gear Metrology Laboratory (NGML) have provided artefacts for correlation of results back to approved tactile meth-odologies. The approach in this project is to utilise designed experiments to see how the effects of changing light source, magnif...
In recent years, numerous methods based on Gaussian process algorithms, weighted-least-square algorithms and machine learning algorithms have been proposed for three-dimensional point cloud registration. However, these algorithms have often been tested on point clouds of similar sizes and point densities, frequently sharing similar initial alignmen...
When carrying out any form of precision measurement, early consideration should be given to the uncertainty of the measurement results. The primary reference document for evaluation is the "ISO Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement". When dealing with variable measurement data on a continuous scale, the structure and mathematical me...
Data fusion enables characterisation of an object using multiple datasets collected by various sensors. To improve optical coordinate measurement using data fusion, researchers have proposed numerous algorithmic solutions and methods. The most popular examples are Gaussian process (GP) and weighted least-squares (WLS) algorithms, which depend on us...
Existing point cloud registration algorithms can be classified into three categories by their mathematical foundations: Gaussian process (GP) algorithms, weighted-least-square (WLS) algorithms and machine learning algorithms. In the past decade, we have seen these algorithms used for registering multiple 3D point clouds with similar dimensions. To...
Manufacturing has recently experienced increased adoption of optimised and fast solutions for checking product quality during fabrication, allowing for manufacturing times and costs to be significantly reduced. Due to the integration of machine learning algorithms, advanced sensors and faster processing systems, smart instruments can autonomously p...
With the increasing adoption of Industry 4.0, optical metrology has experienced a significant boom in its implementation, as an ever-increasing number of manufacturing processes are overhauled for in-process measurement and control. As such, optical metrology for digital manufacturing is currently a hot topic in manufacturing research. Whilst conta...
We categorised existing algorithms for point cloud registration into three categories: Gaussian process (GP) algorithms, weighted least square (WLS) algorithms and machine learning algorithms. These categories could be further classified into user-dependent and user-independent algorithms, based on whether the algorithm requests pre-defined mathema...

The measurement of parts of high geometrical complexity, such as those fabricated via additive manufacturing technologies, represents a fundamental challenge for the quality assurance of manufactured components. The pressing need shared nowadays by numerous industrial sectors for obtaining increased product quality while reducing development times...
In this work an approach to investigate measurement uncertainty in coordinate metrology is presented, based on fitting Gaussian random fields to high-density point clouds produced by measurement repeats. The fitted field delivers a depiction of the spatial distribution of random measurement error over a part geometry, and can incorporate local bias...
Additively manufactured parts are fabricated by generating complex shapes, allowing almost infinite freedom of design. Such parts present significant measurement challenges related to the accessibility and the quality of the measurement results, due to the presence of hollow features, and freeform geometries. Optical measuring instruments are being...
As part of a project to develop a smart 3D form measurement system for quality control of complex 3D parts, we present early work in algorithmic assessment of coverage achieved on the surfaces of a part subjected to optical measurement from a single pose. The method performs an automated detection of pose by finding the best-matching position of th...
In this work, a priori information about the nominal geometry of a measured object and the operating principles of three optical form measurement techniques are used to improve system performance compared to using each technique individually. More specifically, we present a surface form measurement system which uses artificial intelligence and mach...
As part of a project to develop a smart system for measurement of the form of complex 3D components [1][2], we present early work in the development of a method for the automated assessment of the degree of coverage that can be achieved when using unidirectional optical measurement to acquire the surfaces of a complex shape. The automated method is...
In this work, a priori information about the nominal geometry of a measured object and the operating principles of three optical form measurement techniques are used to improve system performance compared to using each technique individually. Photomodelling is a new and fast solution for 3D modelling, based on the same principles of photogrammetry. The comparison between photomodelling and the metrological technique of structured light 3D scanning, provided by the Creaform Go Scan 50 with metrological certification, is the aim of this paper, defining performances and verifying the poten...
Photomodelling is an innovative, economical and fast technique based on the same principles of photogrammetry, which leads to the creation of 3-dimensional models starting from the simple acquisition of photographs. The aim of this paper is to define performances and metrological characteristics of this new technique and to understand the full poten...
The research aims to highlight peculiarities, values, reliability of archaeological survey in its transition from analogue to digital. More in detail, the proposal is based on the comparison between the traditional drawing approach and the technique of photomodelling, in order to show their mutual potentialities and speculating also possible intera...
The aim of this paper is to define performances and metrological characteristics of simple and economical photomodelling techniques for boat shape measurements, an innovative technique developed recently. Compared with the technique based on a Creaform ScanGo 50 structured light 3D scanner with metrological certification, the investigation wants to...

Since the adoption of the European Agenda for Culture in 2007, heritage has been a priority for the Council's work plans for culture, and cooperation at European level h...
A landscape is a place with peculiar characteristics, the result between men and nature interaction, which connotes it, both from the physical point of view and from the cultural perspective. The Umbrian countryside is teeming with historical and artistic references, still intact in their cultural value. The visitor immediately grasps this identity...
