Introduction
I am interested in marine primary production, phytoplankton ecology and community structure. I am an oceanographer and marine ecologist. My earlier work focused on phytoplankton in ephemeral wetlands, with much of my recent work focusing on Net Primary Production and Phytoplankton community structure. This involves the use of both in situ and satellite observations.

Autumn productivity is key to the large marine ecosystems of the Agulhas Bank, which support numerous economically important regional fisheries. Despite such importance, data is sparce on plankton composition in terms of primary or secondary producers, or on trophic transfer. While investigating autumn plankton composition we found that nanophytopl...
The Agulhas Bank is a productive shelf sea, supporting important fish stocks, nursery grounds, and spawning sites. Few studies have examined the dynamics of primary production and the physio-chemical conditions that support this productivity during autumn. We report from a 14-day, 51-station survey of the central and eastern (21-27°E) Agulhas Bank...
Despite the importance of Agulhas Bank (AB) marine productivity in supporting South African coastal fisheries and shelf ecosystems, there are relatively few regional-scale assessments of its spatial and temporal variability, and most productivity studies have been limited in scale. Here we use satellite-derived Net Primary Production (NPP) rates ca...
