This article briefly covers a young company’s success in deploying Taiwan’s National Grid Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). Ubiik, a start-up based in Taiwan, completed deployment of 63,000+ smart meters, connectivity infrastructure and backend systems for the Taiwan Power Company (TPC) to support a 2018 contract.
Technical Report
Full-text available
Recent years have seen a significant push towards the development and mass adoption of Electric Vehicles (EV). Charging station infrastructure has become an important element that would remove the barriers towards adoption of EVs. Ubiik has been working towards helping transition to a smart charging paradigm by integrating long range wireless techn...
Conference Paper
WEIGHTLESS LPWAN technology has been experiencing significant growth in deployment numbers, owing to its inherent capabilities of long-range, low power, massive scalability, firmware-over-the-air and reliable bi-directional communication. Currently, there is no literature available on its performance for AMI electricity metering projects. In this p...

This article introduces the main elements of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) for smart metering and monitoring of electric- ity grid power systems. Come and join us as we explore the basics of smart metering, wireless communication, data aggregation, back-haul and backend networks and their essential roles in providing high quality smart dev...
Technical Report
Full-text available
An overview of Ubiik’s solution for prediction of real solar PV generation capacity in Taiwan is provided. Such a solution consists of a back-end data management and communication infrastructure; a meteorological data pre-processing and conditioning system; an analytical engine and machine learning system to learn from datasets and produce a highly...
Technical Report
Full-text available
This report provides a first draft analysis of the implementation pathways for a microgrid system aimed at integrating an Energy Storage system (ESS) microgrid BMU for Automated Frequency Control (AFC) into the existing grid infrastructure in Taiwan. The report explores Taipower (Taiwan national grid) requirements for such a BMU and studies a recen...

Recent trends in energy production have led to a renewed interest in improving grid level energy storage solutions. Flywheel energy storage is an attractive option for grid level storage, however, it suffers from high parasitic loss. This study investigates the extent to which passive diamagnetic bearings, a form of electromagnetic bearing, can hel...

More effective energy production requires a greater penetration of storage technologies. This paper takes a looks at and compares the landscape of energy storage devices. Solutions across four categories of storage, namely: mechanical, chemical, electromagnetic and thermal storage are compared on the basis of energy/power density, specific energy/p...

Energy storage is a significant problem in the modern world. Present day chemical storage solutions are good but are sensitive to environmental changes, have limited life spans and have significant environmental impacts. By contrast, flywheel energy storage doesn't have these problems, but it carries significant problems of parasitic loss and safet...
Conference Paper
Full-text available
Flywheel energy storage (FES) provides high density storage. Traditional systems relied on mechanical bearings. Bearings can be replaced by electromagnetic variations. Modern FES systems levitate inertial mass on electromagnetic cushions. Levitation consumes energy, so FES systems are confined to short-term power quality applications. An FES system...

Dynamic programming is a powerful method for solving energy minimisation problems in computer vision, for example stereo disparity computations. While it may be desirable to implement this algorithm in hardware to achieve frame-rate processing, a naı¨ve implementation may fail to meet timing requirements. In this paper, the structure of the cost ma...
Conference Paper

Estimation of depth within an imaged scene can be formulated as a stereo correspondence problem. Typical software solutions tend to be too slow for high frame rate (i.e. ges 30 fps) performance. Equivalent hardware solutions, however, can result in marked improvements. This paper explores one such pipelined hardware implementation that generates de...

Dense Stereo Reconstruction in a Field Programmable Gate Array Estimation of depth within an imaged scene can be formulated as a stereo correspondence problem. Software solutions tend to be too slow for high frame rate (i.e. ≥ 30 fps) performance. Hardware solutions can result in marked improvements. This thesis explores one such hardware implement...
Technical Report

Recent studies have led to the development of biologically plausible artificial neural network models. The Pulse Coupled Neural Network (PCNN) is one such model that exploits spiking and local linking properties for improved computational performance. These properties also make it difficult to apply traditional neural network learning approaches fo...
Technical Report
Full-text available
Traditional approaches to artificial vision have demonstrated limited success in real world image analysis. The discovery of oscillatory coherence in the mammalian visual cortex has led to a new approach to image and motion segmentation. This new approach is represented by the emerging field of Pulse Coupled Neural Networks (PCNN). This paper prese...
Technical Report

Estimation of depth within an imaged scene can be formulated as a stereo correspondence problem. Typical software approaches tend to be too slow for real time performance on high frame rate (>= 30fps) stereo acquisition systems. Hardware implementations of these same algorithms allow for parallelization, providing a marked improvement in performanc...
