In this paper, two continuous-review inventory control models are developed using steady-state diffusion approximation method. Accuracy evaluations of the approximate optimal solutions for the inventory control models are reported for selected “Markovian-like” queues to approximate the steady-state queue size behavior of single-server queues with b...
In this paper a diffusion approximate solution for the single-server queuing model is applied to the hybrid queuing model developed for a vendor-managed inventory program. Diffusion approximations for “general” queuing models have been found to be quite accurate in cases of heavy-traffic queues with high capacity utilization of server/supplier reso...
This paper develops a hybrid queuing model for a continuous-review optimal policy of a vendor-managed inventory (VMI) program using steady-state queue size distribution of its corresponding single-server queuing model. The VMI program, which provides the vital coupled link between a retailer and its supplier in a supply chain, is viewed as a hybrid...
The low-fare and no-frills air travel service was pioneered by Southwest Airlines (SWA) in the early 1970’s in the United States. Since the early 1990’s, the low-cost carrier (LCC) model, which makes such service possible as well as profitable, has spread across Europe and finally arrived in Asia in the year 2002. This chapter reviews the successfu...
With the rapid and globalising progress of Information Technology (IT), offshore outsourcing has been particularly popular in the context of business process outsourcing to India. Starting with services like providing the talent pool, and project execution, now the trend of offshore outsourcing is moving towards the higher value echelon of the IT i...
Performance Controlling is one way of increasing efficiency, both for processes and for people handling those processes. Performance controlling is done by checking at the performance indicators for the various processes. However, performance controlling in itself being a management function, carries more meaning if only few Key Performance Indicat...
This paper presents the results of an attempt to estimate the number of computer terminals required to issue export licences to waiting callers. The problem differs from classical queueing studies in that the arrival pattern is non-stationary, and the measure of performance used to judge the quality of service is the size of the remaining queue at...
In this paper the steady-state queue size behavior of single-server queues with bulk-arrival and batch-service, referred to as bulk queues, is approximated by a diffusion process using the instantaneous return approach. Diffusion approximation solutions for various queue size statistics are developed and evaluated for a number of special "Markovian...
