Skates and rays represent one of the most vulnerable components of fish communities in temperate demersal fisheries such as the Irish Sea. They...
Novel, spatial approaches have been called for to manage elasmobranchs, but existing techniques struggle to model abundance hotspots and essential habitats of data-poor stocks. When proposed MPA’s are presented as definitive and singular solutions this can entrench an antagonistic relationship between fisherman and managers/scientists. We have used...
Skates and rays represent one of the most vulnerable components of the fish community in temperate demersal fisheries such as the Irish Sea. They also tend to be data poor in comparison to commercially exploited teleost fish. Spatial management has been suggested as an important tool in protecting these species, but requires an understanding of the...

Skates and rays in the Irish Sea include data poor exploited stocks, and several PET species. We have used survey data and discard records to develop Fmsy and Bpa proxies for these populations. More recent work applies innovative modeling of survey catch and environmental factors such as depth, substrate and flow, to map skate and ray abundance hot...
In light of global declines of upper-level marine predators, such as the great hammerhead, (Sphyrna mokarran) a thorough understanding of their behavioral ecology is needed for designing effective management strategies to preserve their key role in maintaining ecosystem functioning, stability, and resilience. Within the northwestern Atlantic, great...
The Ten Thousand Islands Estuary of Southwest Florida is the site of ongoing long-term hydrologic restoration. It features gradients of human impacts to freshwater input, from restricted to enhanced flows, including areas with relatively small human effects on water delivery. Thus, it is an excellent location to investigate the biotic and abiotic f...
Indo-Pacific coral reefs host diverse assemblages of elasmobranchs from small-bodied mesopredators to apex predators that may vary in the amount of time they spend on reefs. Reef sharks and rays as a group are threatened by human activities and are facing widespread population declines, primarily due to fishing. These human factors may affect not o...
Effective conservation of rare species necessitates the identification of critical habitats and their specific features that influence species occurrence. This study focused on smalltooth sawfish (Pristis pectinata), a critically endangered elasmobranch, to explore how predictive spatial modeling can enhance conservation efforts. By leveraging long...
13 A numerical model which simulates the adsorption of radionuclides by migrating 14 bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean Sea is described, in order to determine the level of con-15 tamination of these fish after a hypothetical nuclear accident and thus be able to assess 16 the possible impact on human consumption. A 4-species foodweb model is incorpo...
A numerical model which simulates the adsorption of radionuclides by migrating bluefin tuna in the Mediter-
ranean Sea is described, in order to determine the level of contamination of these fish after a hypothetical nuclear
accident and thus be able to assess the possible impact on human consumption. A 4–species foodweb model is in-
corporated int...
In ecosystems, sharks can be predators, competitors, facilitators, nutrient transporters, and food. However, overfishing and other threats have greatly reduced shark populations, altering their roles and effects on ecosystems. We review these changes and implications for ecosystem function and management. Macropredatory sharks are often disproporti...
The white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, is an iconic apex predator, playing an important ecological role across its range. Persistent bycatch and overfishing led to white shark declines, but recent studies in the North Western Atlantic (NWA) revealed evidence for regional recovery, and highlighted the importance of Southeastern Florida and the Gul...
Describing patterns in activity and behaviour of animals as they move through their environment helps to reveal fundamental aspects of their ecology and identify key habitat requirements. Nursery areas are used by many shark species and play an important role in maintaining the viability of populations. Although shark movements within nursery areas...
Introduction
Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABT) are large, migratory pelagic predators of high economic importance. ABT are currently managed as two independent stocks assigned to discrete spawning areas (Gulf of Mexico, and Mediterranean); however, stock overlap outside spawning areas makes accurate assignment of catch to stock-of-origin difficult.

Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABT) are large, wide-ranging pelagic predators, which typically migrate between foraging regions in the North Atlantic and two principal spawning regions, the Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranean Sea. A new spawning area has been described in the Slope Sea (SS) region off New England; however, the relationship between ABT tha...
Aquaculture provides livelihoods for hundreds of millions of people, but it also forms a significant source of plastic litter that poses a serious hazard to aquatic ecosystems. How to assess and subsequently manage plastic loads from aquaculture is a pending and pressing issue for aquaculture sustainability, and an important concern for water envir...
With the booming development of information technology and the growing demand for remote sensing data, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing technology has emerged. In recent years, UAV remote sensing technology has developed rapidly and has been widely used in the fields of military defense, agricultural monitoring, surveying and mapping ma...
Marine spatial planning that addresses ocean climate‐driven change (‘climate‐smart MSP’) is a global aspiration to support economic growth, food security and ecosystem sustainability. Ocean climate change (‘CC’) modelling may become a key decision‐support tool for MSP, but traditional modelling analysis and communication challenges prevent their br...
The National Marine Planning Framework (NMPF) provides a long-term structure for the effective spatial management of marine activities reliant upon Ireland’s marine space and resources. This assessment was co-developed to support the ambition to enable climate-adaptive spatial management through the NMPF, supporting the sustainable use of the Irish...
The central stock of northern anchovy (CSNA; Engraulis mordax), the most abundant small pelagic fish in the southern California Current, is key to ecosystem functions. We review drivers of its population dynamics in relation to management. Springtime upwelling intensity lagged by 2 years co-varied positively with CSNA biomass, as did the abundance...

Understanding the factors that influence species’ distributions is crucial for implementing effective management and conservation practices, yet difficult for highly vagile species like sharks. Many shark species demonstrate either spatial and/or temporal sexual segregation, further confounding accurate quantification of habitat suitability. Given...
Seagrass and mangrove habitats have long been established as critical for diverse species at various life-stages, particularly as nursery grounds. However, despite their intrinsic and environmental value, these ecosystems are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activities. In Bimini, Bahamas, where ongoing development threatens ecosystem integ...
Estuaries function as important nursery and foraging habitats for many coastal species, including highly migratory sharks. Pamlico Sound, North Carolina, is one of the largest estuaries in the continental United States and provides a variety of potential habitats for sharks. In order to identify and spatially delineate shark habitats within Pamlico...

Boosted Regression Trees. Excellent for data-poor spatial management but hard to use
Marine resource managers and scientists often advocate spatial approaches to manage data-poor species. Existing spatial prediction and management techniques are either insufficiently robust, struggle with sparse input data, or make suboptimal use of multiple explan...
Chronic overfishing has depleted numerous elasmobranch stocks in the North East Atlantic, but addressing this issue has been hampered by management complications and lacking data. Spatial management approaches have thus been advocated. This work presents a novel application and further development of an advanced spatial modeling technique to identi...
Traditional catch-limit based management of elasmobranchs such as rays is often
confounded by sparse data, among other problems. Spatial management can circumvent
such problems using area closures like Marine Protected Areas. However tools to
predictively map abundance hotspots often struggle in data-limited situations, produce
low-resolution outpu...
It is recommended that demersal elasmobranchs be managed using spatial proxies for Maximum Sustainable Yield. Here we combine escapement biomass—the percentage of the stock which must be retained each year to conserve it—with maps of predicted Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) of four ray species [cuckoo (Leucoraja naevus), thornback (Raja clavata), blo...
