Introduction
My main research interest are drinking water quality, wastewater treatment plants performance assessment and wastewater treatment technologies, with special emphasis on nature-based solutions to remove microorganisms, natural organic matter and contaminants of emerging concern. The urban waste management, regarding methodologies for waste reduce, reuse and recycle, are also areas were contribute in teaching, as well as waste valorization.

The main goal of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is to comply with the treated wastewater (TWW) quality requirements. However, the assessment of this compliance is a rather complex process for WWTPs in the EU Member States, since it requires the integration of a large volume of data and several criteria according to EU Directives 91/271/EEC and...

Removal efficiencies are often used to assess the performance of a single or a group of unit operations/processes (UOPs) of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). However, depending on the influent concentration (Cin), the same efficiency of removal (Er) may be insufficient or excessive to achieve the UOP or WWTP effluent quality requirements, expres...

The Azores archipelago is located in the North Atlantic Ocean, including nine volcanic islands. The Azores climate, temperate oceanic, is influenced by the Azores anticyclone, being characterized by high air humidity indices, low thermal amplitude, abundant precipitation and persistent wind. Like other urban areas, Ponta Delgada, in S. Miguel Islan...

Constructed wetlands are considered integrated ecosystems and a promising wastewater treatment option, relying on vegetation, soils, and microbial assemblages. The potential dispersal of effluents from domestic septic systems, the application of dairy farm effluents containing excessive nutrients and pathogens into pastures, and undertreated efflue...

The constructed wetlands (CWs) are natural engineered systems, suited in general for wastewater treatment from small agglomerations and individual houses. These systems are characterized by low energy and low chemical consumption, and the water treatment is due to biological, chemical and physical processes occurring in granular media, biofilms and...

Performance assessment of water supply and wastewater services is today a major issue. Over the past six years, the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (Portugal) has been developing performance assessment systems for drinking water treatment plants (WTPs) and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In 2009, a national field-test was launched in Por...

A performance assessment system (PAS) is an important instrument to provide a cost-effective and sustainable management of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Despite the fact that many PASs have been developed in recent years, important aspects of WWTP evaluation have not yet been considered. This paper presents the framework and the overall perf...
