We analyze the joint efforts made by the geometry processing and the numerical analysis communities in the last decades to define and measure the concept of “mesh quality”. Researchers have been striving to determine how, and how much, the accuracy of a numerical simulation or a scientific computation (e.g., rendering, printing, modeling operations...

We propose a quality-based optimization strategy to reduce the total number of degrees of freedom associated with a discrete problem defined over a polygonal tessellation with the Virtual Element Method. The presented Quality Agglomeration algorithm relies only on the geometrical properties of the problem polygonal mesh, agglomerating groups of nei...

The problem faced in this paper concerns the recognition of simple and complex geometric primitives in point clouds resulting from scans of mechanical CAD objects. A large number of points, the presence of noise, outliers, missing or redundant parts and uneven distribution are the main problems to be addressed to meet this need. In this article we...

Morphological analysis of protein channels is a key step for a thorough understanding of their biological function and mechanism. In this respect, molecular dynamics (MD) is a very powerful tool, enabling the description of relevant biological events at the atomic level, which might elude experimental observations, and pointing to the molecular det...

Given a set of points representing a curve embedded in the Euclidean space and a family of space curves, we face the problem of finding the curve of the family that best fits these points. For our purposes, we apply the Hough transform (HT), which allows the recognition of a template curve from a set of points and its exact representation. Our meth...

We present the design of a mesh quality indicator that can predict the behavior of the Virtual Element Method (VEM) on a given mesh family or a finite sequence of polyhedral meshes (dataset). The mesh quality indicator is designed to measure the violation of the mesh regularity assumptions that are normally considered in the convergence analysis. W...

The geometric kernel (or simply the kernel) of a polyhedron is the set of points from which the whole polyhedron is visible. Whilst the computation of the kernel of a polygon has been largely addressed in the literature, fewer methods have been proposed for polyhedra. The most acknowledged solution for kernel estimation is to solve a linear program...

In the analysis of archaeological finds, it is important for archaeologists to identify their style, origin, period, etc. to allow their correct classification. In the digital era, the development of automatic techniques to measure the peculiar characteristics of archaeological finds would be of great help in this activity. Considering that ancient...

The Local Binary Pattern (LBP) is a very popular pattern descriptor for images that is widely used to classify repeated pixel arrangements in a query image. Several extensions of the LBP to surfaces exist, for both geometric and colorimetric patterns. These methods mainly differ on the way they code the neighborhood of a point, balancing the qualit...

Texture image retrieval and classification tasks are conducted widely in computer vision but few studies have considered the same problem for decorations and textures applied to surfaces. Thus, in order to address this problem, we propose an algorithm for retrieving and classifying color patterns over surface meshes. In this study, we explored the...

This paper presents the results of the SHREC'19 track: Feature curve extraction on triangle meshes. When reasoning about similarity in a collection of objects with heterogeneous qualities, there are several aspects of interest that can be followed to explore the collection. Indeed, the notion of similarity among 3D models is not only grounded on the geometric shape but also, for instance, on the style, material, color, decorations, common parts....

In this paper we target the problem of the retrieval of colour patterns over surfaces. We generalize to surface tessellations the well known Local Binary Pattern (LBP) descriptor for images. The key concept of the LBP is to code the variability of the colour values around each pixel. In the case of a surface tessellation we adopt rings around verti...

Feature curves are largely adopted to highlight shape features, such as sharp lines, or to divide surfaces into meaningful segments, like convex or concave regions. Extracting these curves is not sufficient to convey prominent and meaningful information about a shape. We have first to separate the curves belonging to features from those caused by n...

In this paper, we draw on Spielman and Srivastava’s method for graph sparsification in order to simplify shape representations. The underlying principle of graph sparsification is to retain only the edges which are key to the preservation of desired properties. In this regard, sparsification by edge resistance allows us to preserve (to some extent)...
