As the popularity of ubiquitous and context-aware applications increases, there is an increasing need to support the execution of these applications on devices with limited processing power. Further, the increasing prevalence of stream processing applications including media streaming and signal processing creates the need to develop efficient and reliable mechanisms to support the execution of such applications over unreliable environments. This usually requires the support of centralized computing infrastructure. We envision a distributed execution environment comprised of diverse computing resources as an alternative solution to this problem. However, these environments are inherently unreliable and usually need applications to provide failure resilience mechanisms. In this paper, we propose the Aegis framework developed to provide a reliable unified computing platform with built-in failure resilience over an unreliable execution environment. A distinguishing feature of the Aegis framework is that the details of the failure resilience mechanisms are abstracted from the applications.
