Objectives: In the course of the past 1 year and 7 months, 53 patients, all singers with vocal disorder whose cause was thought to be nasopharyngitis, were examined and treated at Tokyo Voice Clinic. In this presentation, the relation between nasopharyngitis and voice disorder was discussed by studying the clinical records of these 53 patients.

Subjective speech evaluation is important in maxillofacial rehabilitation. In previous research, the automatic speech intelligibility test system using monosyllables was developed using a computerized speech recognition technique, and it was suggested that the system may effectively be used in evaluated maxillectomy patients' speech. However the sy...
In present screen readers for blind people, users are still required to continue listening to synthesized voices and also they might easily miss important points of a document. A development project of a new screen reader interface has been promoted in cooperation with Japan’s Ministry (METI). The interface named TAJODA can dynamically control the...
A reproduction speed of speech sound changing apparatus which reproduces speech data at a speed in which essential part thereof can be caught so that the outline of the speech sound can be grasped even when changing the reproduction speed, besides remarkably reduces the whole reproducing time wherein a reproducing speed in each predetermined period...
This paper proposes a new method for generating natural prosody for text-to-speech systems. In this method, sentences are composed by inlaying a variable word into each slot in prepared sentence structures. This method can be used for domain specific text-to-speech applications that don't require so many number of sentence structures but many words...
A speaker adapted speech recognition system achieving a high recognition rate for an unknown speaker, comprises a plurality of acoustic templates of speakers for managing correspondence between an acoustic feature of the speech and a content of the speech, a converting portion for converting the acoustic feature of the speech managed by the acousti...

Our speaker‐dependent recognition method (SD) requires 184 training words. To reduce this number, three types of speaker adaptation were studied. Using smaller training words, they adapt segment spectrum templates to a new speaker. The first, SA1, learns a transfer function for converting templates for an existing speaker to those for a new speaker...
This paper describes the interactive extraction of rules that estimate acoustic-segment sequences from an orthography of Japanese language. The rules are in the format of context-sensitive rewriting rules and are arranged into four layers. Initial rules are given by traditional Japanese phonology. In the interactive rule extraction, top-down segmen...

In this paper, the results of a study of automatic discrimination of Japanese voiceless fricatives in vowel (/a,i,u,e,o,n/)?consonant (/F,s,h/) ?vowel (/a,i,u,e,o/) syllables are presented, and the effects of coarticulation on this discrimination are discussed. A total of 4032 speech data uttered by 16 male subjects were used for the study. A highe...
The history of automatic speech recognition research, and current and future speech products at Fujitsu are introduced here. The speech recognition research at Fujitsu started in 1970. Our research efforts have results in the production of a speaker dependent 12,000 word discrete / connected word recognizer(F2360), and a speaker independent 17 word...
An approach to continuous speech recognition is introduced, and an extraction method for phonemic variation rules and the extracted rules are reported. To realize a continuous speech recognizer, we must solve the problem of phonemic variations in continuous speech. We use a top-down method. Our current effort is focused on interactive analysis of p...
A speaker-trained voice recognition system with a large vocabulary has a serious weak point, that is, the user must register a large number of words prior to its use. To be freed from this problem, the authors have studied a speaker adaptation method. This method follows two steps -- 1) selection of "persons" who have voices similar to the user's a...
We propose a new matching algorithm for large vocabulary spoken word recognition, which gives a recognition score compatible to that of the traditional DP matching algorithm, but requires less than 1/10 as much calculation. By a computer simulation of 1,000 categories in speaker dependent recognition of speech samples uttered by five male adult spe...
