The stingless bee Melipona bicolor, native from Brazil, is the only known true polygynic bee. In the same colony, several queens may coexist and share reproductive duties, even when they are not genetically related. Antagonizing kin selection predictions. We aim to investigate the genetic mechanisms beneath this behaviour through genomic and transcriptomic comparisons of workers from polygenic and monogenic colonies.
