Glaciers in High-Mountain Asia are experiencing varying rates and patterns of mass loss due to a complex interplay between glacier surface processes, local conditions and climate forcing. Spatially distributed surface mass balance (SMB) estimates can provide valuable insight into these drivers, but observations are currently limited in both space a...

Fine‐scale seasonal snow depth observations can improve estimates of snow water equivalent at critical times of year. Airborne lidar is the current gold standard for snow depth measurement, but it involves high costs and relatively limited coverage. Using very‐high‐resolution satellite stereo images from WorldView‐2, WorldView‐3, and Pléiades‐HR 1A...

Glacier velocity measurements are essential to understand ice flow mechanics, monitor natural hazards, and make accurate projections of future sea-level rise. Despite these important applications, the method most commonly used to derive glacier velocity maps, feature tracking, relies on empirical parameter choices that rarely account for glacier ph...

Precisely measuring the Earth’s changing surface on decadal to centennial time scales is critical for many science and engineering applications, yet long-term records of quantitative landscape change are often temporally and geographically sparse. Archives of scanned historical aerial photographs provide an opportunity to augment these records with...

Fine-scale, sub-annual satellite stereo observations of snow cover and snow depth can help improve quantification of snow water equivalent at critical times during the accumulation and ablation season. We are refining very-high-resolution (VHR) spaceborne optical stereo methods to generate spatially-continuous digital surface models (DSMs) and maps...

Landslides are a major geohazard that cause thousands of fatalities every year. Despite their importance, identifying unstable slopes and forecasting collapses remains a major challenge. In this study, we use the 7 February 2021 Chamoli rock–ice avalanche as a data-rich example to investigate the potential of remotely sensed datasets for the assess...

On the 7th of February 2021, a large rock-ice avalanche triggered a debris flow in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, India, leaving over 200 dead or missing. The rock-ice avalanche originated from a steep, glacierized north-facing slope. In this work, we assess the precursory signs exhibited by this slope prior to the catastrophic collapse. We evaluat...

A deadly cascade A catastrophic landslide in Uttarakhand state in India on February 2021 damaged two hydropower plants, and more than 200 people were killed or are missing. Shugar et al. describe the cascade of events that led to this disaster. A massive rock and ice avalanche roared down a Himalayan valley, turning into a deadly debris flow upstre...

The Planet SkySat-C SmallSat constellation can acquire very high resolution (0.7 m to 0.9 m) triplet stereo and video imagery with short revisit times, providing an exciting opportunity for global, on-demand 3D mapping of dynamic surface features. However, a lack of suitable processing software, limited geolocation accuracy, and scene-to-scene offs...

High-mountain Asia (HMA) constitutes the largest glacierized region outside of the Earth's polar regions. Although available observations are limited, long-term records indicate sustained HMA glacier mass loss since ~1850, with accelerated loss in recent decades. Recent satellite data capture the spatial variability of this mass loss, but spatial r...

This study analyses spatially resolved estimates of mass budget and surface velocity of glaciers in the Zanskar Basin of Western Himalaya in the context of varying debris cover, glacier hypsometry and orientation. The regional glacier mass budget for the period of 1999–2014 is −0.38 ± 0.09 m w.e./a. Individual mass budgets of 10 major glaciers in t...
Conference Paper
This study estimates change in glacier mass from 2000 to 2014 using Geodetic Mass Balance Technique. This technique involves differencing Digital Elevation Model (DEM) from different years to obtain change in glacier elevation, which is subsequently used to evaluate mass balance. The present study uses Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) DEM f...
Conference Paper
Mass balance studies are important to assess the state of glaciers. Previously, numerous field investigations have been carried out in Baspa basin to measure mass balance. However, mass balance data from field are limited to a small number of glaciers and for short durations. Therefore, this study uses geodetic mass balance technique to evaluate th...

The status of Gangotri, one of the largest Himalayan glaciers, has been a matter of scientific debate and close scrutiny of the global hydrologic community. To comprehend the current state of Gangotri Glacier, we estimated it's geodetic mass budget and ice velocity using optical satellite data. The spatial distribution of ice thickness, using a lam...

Glaciers are important indicators of climate change as well as a major source of freshwater. Variations in the extent, mass and velocity of Glaciers have a direct impact on some of the key components of the global water cycle, including sea level rise and freshwater availability. Apart from being one of the largest Himalayan glaciers, Gangotri is a...

Question
I am looking for watershed boundaries and river polylines dataset for High Mountain Asia. I currently have access to data available on Hydoshed and that on ThirdPoleNet Website containing contributions from ICIMOD. However, there are some discrepancies. Is there a better alternative?
Question
I am trying to make a DEM with PRISM data downloaded from JAXA website using RPC model but I am not able to find the RPC file in the downloaded product.
Question
I am trying to create DEM of a glaciated area from a cartosat image. I am having difficulties in finding suitable GCPs as most of the area is glaciated and I am trying to input elevation from SRTM C DEM as the refrence DEM. I am not getting much stable areas. I am using rational function model (extract from image). So how to use GCPs and how many stereo GCPs will be required for computing an accurate Math Model?
