Can social services sustainably operate from a critical perspective that promotes social justice? In the last four decades, the shift toward market-based operation of social services has positioned management as the central discipline in the public field, binding social work managers to neo-managerial objectives such as the measurability and econom...

The normative construction of social services’ organizational boundaries may operationally exclude marginalized people by neglecting their specific needs and placing them outside the organization's domain. In order to develop a critical outline of social services’ organizational boundaries, we present a qualitative study involving 10 transgender wo...

This study investigated the correlations between social workers’ levels of religiosity and their professional attitudes toward discussing sexual health. The focus was particularly on the potential mediating role of their attitudes to heteronormative beliefs. A random sample of 150 social workers from Israel (Jewish [63.3 percent], Palestinian-Arab...

The experiences and daily lives of older adults living in poverty are underexplored topics in the literature. Specifically, the question of agency and how older people cope with poverty and resist it requires further investigation. Ruth Lister's model is the theoretical foundation of this study, which emphasises individuals' ability to be active ag...

Critical perspectives and practices are fundamental to social work, yet there are only scarce examples of direct critical practice in public social services, and even fewer empirical evaluations of their outcomes for service users and social workers. This article presents a rapid evidence review of 25 evaluation studies of five programs that operat...

Most of the research on human milk donations after prenatal loss has focused on donations to milk banks in which donors and recipients are anonymous to each other. In contrast, in this Israel-based study, we focus on an ongoing, direct interaction between a bereaved donor and recipients who adopted a new baby. We conducted a relational autoethnogra...
Article
One of the main characteristics of social work is the fundamental tension between the profession's conservative and critical rationales. In the last three decades, this tension has informed the development of critical resistance to the deprofessionalisation effects of neo-managerial rationality, which establishes cost reduction and fiscal accountab...
Article
Critical social work scholars consider recognition a counterpractice to othering, but, empirical evidence of recognition as a contextualized and feasible challenge to othering in social services is scarce. This gap in the existing literature is significant in light of the operation of conservative and neo-managerial approaches known in the European...
Article
In the current construction of critical theory of social work practice, recognition is a central explanatory concept. It informs critical practice as primarily relational, focused on providing respect and visibility for service users, and allowing their voices to be heard. However, while critical political theory emphasizes the ethical commitment t...

Critical social work scholarship addresses recognition as a counterpractice to Othering. However, while extensive attention has been given to processes of Othering, research that presents empirical evidence of such practice in social services today is scarce. This gap in the literature is important considering the hegemonic stance of conservative a...

Critical reflection processes are fundamental to critical social work practice. Nevertheless, these processes have been criticized for lacking a coherent translation to direct professional practice. Existing models of critical reflection culminate in the formulation of critical professional perspectives, leaving the translation of critical perspect...

Extensive critical literature has pointed to the corrosive effects of managerialism and New Public Management (NPM) on social services and demonstrated how its local versions dominate policymaking. Challenging such critical views, another stream of thought has emerged, emphasizing the way in which policymaking could take a hybrid shape, reflecting...

An examination of resistance to the neoliberal dominance over public welfare organisations' operation reveals a situation of stagnation, with the call for critical resistance translated into either sporadic minor practices of isolated professionals or theoretical manifestos that demand major change, but have inadequate effect on policy. Drawing fro...

While managerialism is widely criticized for its deskilling effect on professional discourses, the evaluation of the power relations between managerialism and the critical professionalism that opposes it has not yet been sufficiently developed. To enable the assessment of fluctuations in these power relations, this study used in-depth interviews wi...

Scholars claim that the integration of critical social work into public social services is impossible considering its weak position in the managerialist context of these services. Consequently, critical practice is mainly described as covert and reflective of the hierarchical power dynamics between managerialism and critical professionalism. Thus,...
