The ocean wave system in nature is very complicated and physical model studies on floating breakwaters are expensive and time consuming. Till now, there has not been available a simple mathematical model to predict the wave transmission through floating breakwaters by considering all the boundary conditions. This is due to complexity and vagueness...

Planning and design of coastal protection works like floating pipe breakwater require information about the performance characteristics of the structure in reducing the wave energy. Several researchers have carried out analytical and numerical studies on floating breakwaters in the past but failed to give a simple mathematical model to predict the...

Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is being applied to solve a wide variety of coastal/ocean engineering problems. In practical terms ANNs are non-linear modeling tools and they can be used to model complex relationship between the input and output system. In addition, ANNs have a very high degree of freedom and are very simple to train the system for...

In the present study, an artificial neural network method has been applied for wave transmission prediction of multilayer floating breakwater. Two neural network models are constructed based on the parameters which influence the wave transmission of floating breakwater. Training and testing of the network models are carried out for different hidden...

Purpose Research on strategic procurement was mostly focussed on the clients' and main contractors' perspectives, while limited work had been done from a subcontractor's perspective. The paper hypothesises that “strategic capability” influences the latent constructs of power, dependence and collaboration in the main contractor–subcontractor relatio...

Purpose Construction industry is one of the worst affected sectors due to the impact of the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the key competencies that should be demonstrated by the contractors in the post-COVID-19 scenario to make them resilient to the adverse impact of pande...

Simultaneous biofuel production and wastewater treatment using microalgae have future prospects for sustainable development. However, cultivation and harvesting system still have challenges to be addressed to make it implementable in large as an energy efficient process. This chapter discusses about different cultivation and harvesting processes wi...

Disposal of industrial waste is a major concern all over the world due to stringent laws enforced by government agencies. This has motivated many researchers to recycle these wastes into an innovative construction material. Presently, these wastes are recycled to some extent, however the majority of them disposed to landfill. Thus, leading to envir...

Disposal of industrial waste is of major concern for industries all over the globe due to environmental restrictions enforced by the government agencies. Oman is no exception and currently steel industries are facing major problem in disposing Electric Arc Furnace Slag (EAFS) and Electric Arc Furnace Dust (EAFD). It is expected that the generation...
Article
Full-text available
Due to environmental concerns, government agencies globally have enforced stringent laws for disposal of industrial waste. This has an immense pressure on industries to dispose and recycle their waste in an ecologically safe manner. Similarly, in Oman, the disposal of spent catalyst and quarry dust is a major concern to oil refineries and stone qua...

In the present study, Support Vector Machines (SVM) and hybrid of Genetic Algorithm (GA) with SVM models are developed to predict the damage level of non-reshaped berm breakwaters. Optimal kernel parameters of SVM are determined by using GA algorithm. The models are trained and tested on the data set obtained from the experiments which were carried...

Understanding the physics of complex system plays an important role in selection of data for training intelligent computing models. Based on the physics of the wave transmission of Horizontally Interlaced Multilayer Moored Floating Pipe Breakwater, a laboratory experiment carried out at Department of Applied Mechanics, National Institute of Technol...

Support Vector Machine (SVM) works on structural risk minimization principle that has greater generalization ability and is superior to the empirical risk minimization principle as adopted in conventional neural network models. However, it is noticed that one particular model in isola-tion cannot capture all data patterns easily. In the present pap...

Question
Concrete is almost used in all civil engineering works right from residential to commercial buildings, roads, dams, tunnels, airport, etc are few to mention. Cement is the important constituent used  in preparation of concrete. The main issue with the production of cement is the energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission which contradicts the sustainability concepts. There is a need to reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission during production of concrete. So what are the recent trends in concrete technology from sustainability point of view?
Question
Artificial Intelligence is successful and widely used in solving problems associated with complexity, and non-linearity. It is extensively used in almost all aspects of concrete technology. However, advances in ANN applications are trivial and not progressing for last four decades.. So, what are the latest developments and potential challenges in this area?
Question
Most of the industrial waste is checked for annealing loss/gain. for example electric arc furnace slag and dust, fly ash, other cementitious materials. What is the significance of this test from waste management/recycling  perspective? If annealing loss/gain  is negligible, what does it infer?
