The present paper, in spite of the difficulties to be foreseen, intends to lead a comparative discussion on some theoretical propositions, in particular typological ones, that have been developed according to distinct methods around two different objects: on the one hand, the mental states (intentions, desires, emotions...) that philosophy, now bac...

Claude Zilberberg made clear of his intellectual indebtedness to Hjelmslev. That implies, firstly, that he has his own thinking, secondly, that he is helped to shape it by someone else, in this case Hjelmslev (among other writers) and, thirdly, that he might have transmitted some of the Hjelmslev’s concepts in his texts. The first two presumptions...

Epistemological argumentation nearly always calls for controversy because it deals with representations and values, even if these representations and values are used as “conditions” for scientific practice. This kind of controversy has a designated audience, namely the scientists. Such an audience does not remain passive, though: its adjucatory rol...

Aspectuality has been brought to the semiotic discussion in various ways. Its first use regarded the application of grammatical aspects to non–linguistic actions such as gestures. It later lost its strict ties to the grammar of actions and was extended to the notions of space and ob- jects, since the appearance of space and objects also changes in...

In this paper, I would like to discuss the contribution that post-structuralist semiotics has brought to the analysis of academic discourse. The semiotic model was developed initially for the analysis of tales and myths. It has been gradually extended to various forms of fiction (novels, short stories), and then, according to "a growing degree of c...

This paper aims to explore the notion of “paradigm” by following its development in the epistemology of linguistics and semiotics of the twentieth century through three landmarks: its first use within linguistics, by Ferdinand de Saussure, its redefinition by Louis Hjelmslev, and its reinterpretation in textual semiotics by Algirdas J. Greimas. The...

What is a genre? Applied to the textual domain, this question has received a descriptive answer in language studies. Genres would thus be distinguished from one another through formal (syntactic and lexical) traits and specific enunciative markers, as well as through the specificities of punctuation on the layout. Such response presupposes a global...

Arbitrariness is commonly seen as a major concept in Saussure’s thought, and it even receives the status of a “principle” in his theory. It is not only the characteristic feature of the relation between the signifier and the signified (the semiological relation is arbitrary), but moreover it is constitutive of this very relation (the relation is se...

In 1948, the Belgian painter Rene Magritte exhibited in an art gallery in Paris paintings and gouaches that were met with acrimony. Leaders of surrealism, usually fond of provocations, did not accepted this one. Many readings of this event have been proposed, starting from Magritte himself. The variety or even the divergence of such readings, howev...

We approach the notion of theme as a problematic one. Particularly, one can observe that the functions of a theme, as they are assigned by the specialists, especially in linguistics and literary studies, are multiple and mutually incompatible. It is from this variety reluctant to the disciplinarized modes of knowledge that we have in mind to establ...

We seek in this study to identify the specific meanings of graphics (maps, plans, diagrams, and tables), although graphics are generally integrated in broader contexts (including texts, images, symbols, etc.). These meanings are analyzed at a general level, which involved the following semiotic parameters: cultural practices and their rhetorical fu...

Given that Hjelmslev views theory as a pure deductive system, we must understand how such a theory can harmonize with an empirical science. The means for such understanding can be explained via two principles: 1) the link between theory and empirical knowledge is based on a principle of accommodation; 2) the theory of a certain empirical knowledge...

The use that is made of the notion of metalanguage in semiotics differs from its previous uses in logic and linguistics, even if it is influenced by them. It presents itself and answers to different questions from those of logical analysis or linguistic description. The present study will focus on those problems, related to the effectiveness of sem...

The author intends to stage an agreement, among the least likely ones, and to say it once and for all, an imaginary one: an agreement of Magritte as an aesthete with Wittgenstein as the logician in Tractatus logic-philosophicus. The excuse for such an agreement lies in the importance that both give to a function of expression -showing- at the expen...

Based on some preparatory notes for a series of lectures Hjelmslev gave in London in 1947 and a typescript drawn from these notes for an aborted publication, publishers proposed a text, first in a French translation titled “La structure fondamentale du langage” (1968) and then in an English version as “The Basic Structure of Language” (1973). In this paper, we seek to describe the manner in which semioticians have dealt with knowledge as an object of study and thought. Six approaches are listed as: 1) the epistemological project of the theories considered nowadays as the foundations of semiotics (Saussure, Hjelmslev, Peirce); 2) the federation of science in a logico-semiotic theory (Mor...

« Characteristic and dimension » (1988), by L. J. Prieto, offers a ‘semiological’ definition of what ‘syntax’ is. Here we propose to examine this definition in three steps: 1) in regards to its theoretical context and in connection with the definitions of ‘meaning’ and ‘discursive universe’; 2) through a comparative analysis between its theoretical...
