In its Part 1, the book presents the principles and the elementary theory of the main geophysical methods (gravity, magnetics, thermometry, self potential, gamma rays, seismic, resistivity, electromagnetics) used in archaeology, and also the design of geophysical prospectings and the processing and interpretation of their resulting data.Part 2 is d...
A very detailed geomagnetic research on the area of the ancient Greek town Histria in Dobrudja (Romania) shows the detailed position of some ancient roads and buildings, including the agora, a monumental gate of entering the town, the probable ancient harbour and other details.
The use of the electrical image method in calculating the potential of a source in the presence of a buried conductive sphere proves to be difficult because of the great number of terms making up the potential formula. The disadvantages contained by this method are avoided here by resorting to the theory of graphs. In view of this aim the “propagat...
ABSTRACT
Our geomagnetic research at Porolissum (Roumania) in 1996 (see BAR International Series 1043 (I), 2002) has proved the high possibilities of a well done geophysical research in archaeological sites with straight linear trends (buildings and streets). The present paper confirms the possibilities of geophysics even in prehistorical settleme...
During a geophysical prospecting for groundwater in Sahara (in an area near to the well of I-n-Azawa), I discovered some unknown rock engravings of a non-tipical artistic aspect. Their particularities suggested the existence of a particular artistic "school" in tha ancient Sahara, in the area of the oued Ti-n-Tarabin.
As a result of a geomagnetic research in the area of the ancient Porolissum, the urban structure of the town, including the very detailed buildings' horizontal shape, was achieved, An electrical resistivity mapping has shown that the lithology of the geological structure allowed the underground water to be exploited by shallow wells.
Geological Interpretation of the Gravity and Magnetic Data in the Madaras-Satu Mare Area. The aim of the paper is to find out the geologic source of an aero-magnetic DTa anomaly of great extension and an amplitude of more than 100 nT (also obvious in the ground magnetic DZa data) mapped in the Moftinu Mic-Doba-Satmarel-Ruseni-Madaras-Gelu-Terebesti...
The paper gives the most probable geological significance of a very local and
sharp gravity milllmum (AGLm in the paper) of about 2 mgal, in the Strei Basin.
Mathematical modeling shows that the anomaly's source must be very shallow
and must explain a mass deficit of at least 45 million tones,
The anomaly's central part can be explained by an almos...
Using the diurnal variation of the magnetic field registered at a ground station, to correct aeromagnetic data registered in air at a large distance of it, could produce unacceptable errors. The paper shows an experiment of using a trigonometric regression to deduce it directly from the aeromagnetic data, with very good results.
cone...
Results of geoelectrical research carried out in the area of Ocna Sibiului salt massif are presented. Electrical soundings in Schlumberger arrangement (AB maximum equal 120 m) and selfpotential measurements have been used. The resistivity measurements indicated the presence of some underground excavations in the salt massif, flooded by brackish wat...
The gravitational attraction produced by geological bodies of irregular shape can be easily determined by dividing it into cubes of small size. Almost 5,000 values of the gravitational attraction were determined using a computer, which permited to build up two templates useful to find the gravitational attraction without computing them each time. T...
The paper includes the first FORTRAN IV computer program achieved and published in Romania for geophysical data processing.
The results of the geoelectrical profiling methods of prospection using a single current line are strongly distorted as compared with the true shape of the buried bodies causing them. A new method ("crossing transmitters"), us...
