In an ageing society facing challenges for the sustainable well-being of older adults, there has been an increasing focus on the potential of soft power in recent years. Like economic and structural, social indicators can become integral indicators of older generations’ well-being. This study aims to propose a construct of the social embeddedness o...

The Lithuanian consumer society is evolving, but we know little about it. On the one hand, previous research shows that it is a survival society that prioritizes functional needs, on the other hand, there are indications that a segment of consumers oriented towards self-expression is forming in Lithuania. Since consumption is both a consequence and...

This chapter will examine domestic violence, which is a lifelong experience of women, and raise the following question: why is violence against older women (VOW) an invisible social problem and what is the role of sexist and ageist attitudes in this? This analysis contributes to the unpacking of culturally produced barriers through examining how th...

Ageism has been shown to have a negative impact on older people’s health and wellbeing. Though multiple scales are currently being used to measure this increasingly important issue, syntheses of the psychometric properties of these scales are unavailable. This means that existing estimates of ageism prevalence may not be accurate. We conducted a sy...

Often we are opposing older people to younger ones; we are talking about a generational gap, even a generational conflict. Age distinctions are constructed by different behaviour and attitudes. In the paper, nutritional habits (attitudes and practices) are regarded as one of potential means to categorize older generation. The paper has a dual goal:...

Conference Paper
Men’s studies is an emerging research area in many post-communist societies. There is a little evidence on the impact of the rapidly changing political and socio-economic context on the normative masculinity model and male identity. The paper is directed towards a study of how men become fathers (their perception of a family and man’s familial ro...

Viewed form configurational perspective, family is a complex set of personal ties and interdependencies that extend far beyond it’s boundaries and include not only more distant kinship, but also friends (Widmer, 2010). Basing on this theoretical approach, the roles of women and men in the informal social support networks are explored in the paper....

The increase of individual life expectancy merges several generations in time, namely, they are coexisting in the same time – so are developing vertical kinship ties. Decline in fertility and birth postponement towards advanced age, in turn, narrow the horizontal kinship ties. Meanwhile, the increase in the intensity of migration progressively sepa...

Project
Ageism (i.e., the complex and often negative social construction of old age) is highly prevalent. There is unequivocal evidence concerning the negative consequences associated with ageism at the individual, familial, and societal levels. The long term goal of this Action is to challenge the practice of ageism and allow older people to realize their full potential. This will be achieved by enhancing scientific knowledge and attention to ageism, by bringing together and integrating the different disciplines of research, by developing national, multi-national and international collaborations with public policy officials, non-academic professionals, civil society NGOs and older persons, and by fostering a new generation of researchers. Expected deliverables include: a) the creation of a web-site; b) a depository database of scientific measures and evidence based interventions that target ageism; c) the facilitation of scientific Training Schools, Short Term Scientific Missions and conferences; and d) the dissemination of collaborative working papers, scientific reports, proceedings, academic publications, policy and recommendation papers and an edited book on ageism. In light of the changing demographics, the high prevalence of ageism, its complex social roots, broad consequences, and the limited research on the topic, this Action is timely and has both practical and scientific significance.

The aim of the project is to reveal the demographic trends of older age (60+) population living alone in Lithuania, to explore the level of their social integration, their every day practices and the issues related to living alone: perceived welfare and social risks possibly emerging across the life course - social exclusion, isolation and loneliness. Project will provide an opportunity to offer evidence-based recommendations for ageing policy. The envisaged research is of interdisciplinary character and integrates theoretical knowledge and methodological approaches of Demography, Sociology, Gerontology and Social Policy, its results will both contribute to a new scientific knowledge about older (60+) persons living alone in Lithuania and will have practical benefits. Recommendations to public authorities will be drawn up on policy measures that could diminish the risks of social isolation and improve well-being of people living alone, thus contributing to the development of the welfare society in Lithuania. Consistent dissemination of research results (publications and presentations) will contribute to the Lithuanian social science expertise and enhancement of its international competitiveness.
